List of mayors of Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of mayors of Berlin includes the mayors of the German capital Berlin .

history

Since 1307 the two cities of Berlin and Cölln had a joint administration. The joint city council consisted of two mayors. The council and with it the mayor were each elected for one year. Re-election after a one-year break was common, with many mayors at that time serving as mayors every other year from their first election until their death. After the unification of the previously independent cities of Berlin, Cölln, Friedrichswerder , Friedrichstadt and Dorotheenstadt to form the royal capital and residence of Berlin , the city had three to four mayors each. From 1726 there was a city president appointed by the king to whom the mayors were subordinate.

Since Stein's urban reform , the title of mayor of Berlin was in the Kingdom of Prussia and in the Free State of Prussia . He was on an equal footing with the President of the Prussian Provinces . As a result of the increasing division of Berlin after the Second World War , the Soviet occupying power appointed its own Lord Mayor in East Berlin in 1948 , while the Lord Mayor, reduced to West Berlin as a result, since 1951 by the State of Berlin, which was founded in the previous year, because of the new dual function of city and state head bore the title of Governing Mayor . Since the first parliamentary elections and the election of the governing mayor after reunification in 1991, he has been governing mayor of all of Berlin.
