A controversy arose after the pommel horse exercise of the Japanese Kōhei Uchimura , who got a score of 13.466 with a faulty departure. This exercise was the last of the entire competition, and Uchimura's rating would have meant fourth place for the Japanese team. The Japanese team protested, whereupon the referees increased the score by 0.700 to 14.166 points after the video study. In the end, this increase was enough for the silver medal. The British team was downgraded to bronze, Ukraine dropped to fourth.
