mode

The 24 qualified teams for men and women will each be drawn into six groups of four. In the groups, each duo plays against each other team. Every winner of a game receives two points, the loser one point. In the event of a tie, the quotient of the ball points is decisive for the rank in the table. The group winners and runners-up as well as the best two thirds in the group move straight to the round of 16. The four remaining thirds in the group determine the last two round of 16 players in two play-off games (lucky losers). From the round of 16, the simple knockout system continues until the final.

qualification

For men and women, 24 duos each qualify. There is a maximum of two places per nation. As the host, Japan will have a permanent starting place. The other teams qualify in different ways. A starting place goes to the winners of the 2019 World Cup . An international qualification tournament took place in September 2019, in which two starting places were played out. 15 places will be awarded to the best placed teams in the FIVB Olympic rankings . This ranking should take into account the results of the World Championship, the FIVB World Tour and the Finals of the Continental Tour between September 1, 2018 and June 14, 2020. The players must take part in at least twelve tournaments. If more than two teams from a nation are in the top 15, other teams move up. The last places should be played in June 2020 at continental tournaments, the Continental Cup Finals. How qualification will continue after the Olympic Games have been postponed to 2021 is currently unclear.
