Otto von Tiedemann (born October 17, 1811 in Königsberg , † April 14, 1892 in Dresden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Posen .

Life

origin

Otto comes from the West Prussian family Tiedemann . His great-grandfather Karl Eduard von Tiedemann fought for Frederick the Great , whose eldest son Carl Friedrich Wilhelm (1756–1803) was the general's grandfather. His parents were the Prussian Colonel Karl von Tiedemann (1787–1848) and his wife Henriette, née von Hirsch (1787–1856).

Military career

After attending grammar school in Erfurt , Tiedemann joined the 31st Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by mid-September 1830 . For further training he completed the General War School from October 1833 to July 1836 . Subsequently, Tiedemann was initially used as a battalion adjutant, rose to regimental adjutant in 1842 and was commanded as adjutant of the 7th Infantry Brigade from March 22, 1843 . On July 11, 1848, he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and on September 12, 1848, he was appointed Adjutant of the 7th Division .

During the campaign against Denmark on March 22, 1849, Tiedemann was commanded as adjutant to Major General von Hirschfeld to Schleswig-Holstein and in this capacity took part in the battles near Almind , Viuf , Vejle and Aarhus . For his work he received the Red Eagle Order IV class with swords. From November 27, 1850 to February 15, 1851 he was General Staff Officer of the mobile 13th Division .

Under promotion to Captain Tiedemann was on 12 April 1851 in the General Staff added, and the General Staff of the May 19, 1855 6th Division commanded. There he was promoted to major on July 18, 1855 , and on July 12, 1858, he returned to the General Staff. This was followed on November 23, 1858, when he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion, and was employed in the 8th Infantry Regiment (Leib-Infanterie-Regiment) in Berlin. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1859 , he was in command of the mobile 8th Landwehr Regiment during the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War . On May 8, 1860, he was commissioned to lead the 8th combined infantry regiment, from which the 5th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment emerged when the army was reorganized on July 1, 1860 . Tiedemann received command of the association , rose to colonel on October 18, 1861 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III in January 1862 on the occasion of the festival of the order. Class with swords and on September 22, 1863 with the Order of the Crown III. Class honored. In the war against Denmark in 1864 he took part in the occupation of Fehmarn . In the war against France in 1870/71 he took part in the enclosure of Metz and the battle of Noisseville . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, he returned to his position as Commander of Posen after the peace treaty . After being awarded the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring, Tiedemann was put up for disposal on June 11, 1872 with the statutory pension .

He died in Dresden on April 14, 1892.

family

Tiedemann married on April 21, 1843 in Frankfurt (Oder) Emilie von Schönfeld (1820-1896), a daughter of the Saxon chamberlain and Prussian chief forester Karl August von Schönfeld. The daughter Gertrud (1848–1914) emerged from the marriage, and in 1872 she married Lieutenant General Hans Bauer von Bauern .
