Páez is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia . The main town (cabecera municipal) of Páez is Belalcázar . In Belalcázar is the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate Tierradentro

geography

Páez is located in the Provincia de Oriente in Cauca in the Tierradentro region at an altitude of 1380 m above sea level. NN , 130 km from Popayán in the foothills of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . Part of the Nevado del Huila volcano is on the territory of the municipality. The area of the municipality is mountainous and is crossed by the Páez and Símbola rivers. The municipality borders in the north on Planadas in the department del Tolima , in the northeast on Teruel in the department del Huila , in the east on La Plata , Íquira and Nátaga in Huila, in the southwest on Inzá in the department del Cauca and in the west on Silvia , Jambaló and Toribío in Cauca.

history

The indigenous people of the Paez lived in the area of today's Paéz even before the arrival of the Spaniards . Páez has been a municipality since 1908. The population is made up of Paez indigenous people, who live in 15 reservations, as well as Afro-Colombians and mestizos. The community was hit by a severe earthquake on June 6, 1994.

economy

The main industry in Páez is agriculture . In particular, coffee , beans , potatoes , corn , sweet grasses and berries are grown. Cattle production also plays an important role.
