The Volvo PV 544 is a passenger car from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo and was produced from 1958 as the successor to the first " humpback Volvo " PV 444 .
technology
The self-supporting body and the four-cylinder engine with hanging valves, three crankshaft bearings and 60 HP (44 kW) to 80 HP (59 kW) were taken over from PV 444 . The three- or four-speed gearbox and the chassis with front wheels individually suspended on double wishbones of unequal length , a driven rigid rear axle on four trailing arms and a panhard rod, and coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers on all wheels remained essentially the same. Volvo was the first manufacturer to equip its vehicles - the PV 544 and the P 121 "Amazon" presented in 1956 - with three-point seat belts on the front seats as standard from 1959 .
Many believed that production of the PV 444 would end after the technically similar but more modern designed Volvo Amazon was presented in 1956. However, the PV 444 has been revised; received, among other things, an undivided windscreen and a new dashboard with a belt speedometer and padding ("safety pad") like the Amazon. With more space in the back seat for three adults, the improved model continued to be offered as the PV 544 from 1958.
In 1961, the PV 544 and the P 121 Amazon received a 12-volt system. In 1962, the rust protection, which had already been good since the late 1940s, was improved again with phosphate dip priming . The car's success continued and it was the best-selling passenger car in Sweden for several years .
Production of the sedan ended after 243,995 cars were built in 1965. The last, the 440,000th PV 544, a black painted “Sport” model with 95 hp (70 kW), was driven off the production line on October 20, 1965 at 3:00 p.m. It is in the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg , near the factory in Torslanda .
The PV 210 "Duett" station wagon was derived from the PV 544, and 59,544 units were produced. It was introduced in 1960 and built until 1969.
In contrast to information in Swedish sources, the export versions of the PV 544 (11244) have always been supplied with a black exterior finish since 1958. Some copies were made at DiVolvo in Chile.
Model history
In the course of its production time, numerous improvements were made to the Volvo PV544, but most of them are not visible from the outside. In order to be able to distinguish the individual years of construction from the outside, one must therefore pay very close attention to details:
- From August 1961 the front indicators are mounted further down and further out on the fender , the speedometer reaches up to 180 km / h and “544” emblems are attached to the side of the bonnet.
- from August 1962 hubcaps embossed with a large “V” instead of “Volvo” lettering.
