Paul Michael Zulehner (born December 20, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian theologian and Catholic priest . The sociologist of religion and former university professor retired in 2008.

Life

Paul Zulehner was born in the hospital in Döbling . After Josef (1932–2003), Hans (1934–2011) and Jörg (1938–2003), he was the fourth son of his parents Josef and Luise Zulehner, née Tauber. His brother Josef was ordained a priest by Franz König in 1961 . A daughter of his brother Jörg is a professor at the University of Frankfurt a. M. In his youth Paul Zulehner was a member of the Schottensängerknaben. Here he made friends with Georg Braulik and Wolfgang Schüssel . After graduating from the Wasagymnasium in 1958 , Paul Zulehner studied theology and philosophy in Innsbruck , Vienna and Munich . He sees himself as a student of Karl Rahner . At the age of 21, he received his doctorate in philosophy from the social ethicist Johannes Schasching in Innsbruck in 1961 . With an investigation into Austromarxism , he received his doctorate in theology under Gottfried Heinzel in Innsbruck in 1964. On June 29, 1964, he was ordained a priest by Franz Jachym . He celebrated his first class on July 19, 1964 in Bad Schallerbach . From 1965 to 1967 he worked as a chaplain in the Altmannsdorfer Church in Vienna. In 1967 he became prefect of studies in the Vienna seminary and assistant to Rudolf Weiler at the University of Vienna. He learned the statistical trade in the following years with Hermann Denz at the University of Linz. In 1969 he was released from Franz König to study for his habilitation. He first went to Constance for a year, where he studied with Thomas Luckmann and lived in the parsonage at the Constance Minster. Then he went to Munich for a year to study with Karl Rahner. In 1973 he completed his habilitation with the Würzburg pastoral theologian Rolf Zerfaß with a study on secularization . In 1973 he went to the University of Bamberg as a professor and from 1974 to 1984 he was a university professor in Passau , where he dealt intensively with questions of religion and church sociology as well as pastoral theological issues. Isidor Baumgartner was his successor in Passau .

Since 1984 he has been a professor of pastoral theology at the University of Vienna. His specialty is religion and values ​​research, in which he carried out numerous research projects and studies at home and abroad. He is an advisor to several specialist committees and a sought-after speaker. From 2000 to 2007 he was Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna .

Zulehner retired in October 2008 , but is still active in science. He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Upper Austrian think tank Academia Superior .

On October 16, 2017, Paul Zulehner, together with the Prague religious philosopher Tomáš Halík , initiated the online petition Pro Pope Francis , which was signed by almost 75,000 people before it was handed over to the Pope on February 28, 2019. It is expressed to the Pope that the signatories are grateful to the Pope for his courageous and theologically well-founded administration. The Pope's concern is “every single person loved by God.” The petition assures Pope Francis of prayer and support and encourages him to continue on the path he has chosen.

After the end of the Amazon Synod on October 27, 2019, when the participating bishops decided to recommend the ordination of married permanent deacons to priests to the responsible church authorities for the Amazon under certain circumstances , Zulehner wants an online petition “Amazonia also with us ”, which aims to make similar proposals to the German bishops.
