Achleiten is a place on the Danube in the Innkreis in Upper Austria , and belongs to the municipality of Freinberg in the Schärding district . He is known for the border crossing to Germany and the river level of the Danube.

geography

The hamlet is about 3½ kilometers east of Passau , at around 370  m above sea level. A. Height on the edge of the Sauwald , which forms the first bend of the Danube to Passau, 80 meters above the river.

The place has only 3 addresses, and belongs to the locality and cadastral municipality of Hinding .

Upstream from Aschau, both banks of the Danube belong to Bavaria , from then on the state border runs over the boundary stone No. 1 of the Republic of Austria on the small rocky island of Kräutelstein to the middle of the river, before both banks are Austrian only at the Jochenstein 20 km downstream. This makes Achleiten the most north-westerly place in Austria south of the Danube, and the one where the Danube reaches Austria.

Down on the Danube runs the Nibelungenstraße  (B 130), the north is the Soldatenau another island in the Danube.

Passau – Achleiten border crossing

The Kräutelstein Bridge (built 1900–1903)

Below the village on the Danube, directly east of the Kräutelstein Bridge, is the railway bridge of the Passau – Hauzenberg railway line, which has been closed since January 31, 2001 , and the Passau – Achleiten border crossing between Austria and Germany. It is the road crossing from the B 130 Nibelungenstraße to the St 2125 Regensburg - Passau.

The small border traffic covered the whole area up to Hanging - Wegscheid near Kollerschlag in the Mühlviertel , and to Neuhaus - Schärding am Inn.

In 1970, in accordance with the agreement between Austria and Germany on the facilitation of border clearance in rail, road and ship traffic, a forward German border service was set up at the customs office on Austrian territory.

In 1978 the customs killers of Achleiten took place here .

On December 1, 1997, border controls were suspended with the Schengen Agreement .

As a result, the border station was replaced by a gas station. This is (as of 2011) particularly relevant because of the tank tourism due to the lower fuel prices in Austria for several years for the traffic load in the Passau district of Innstadt , which is why variants of a new road bridge downstream from the city of Passau were discussed.

In the wake of the refugee crisis in Germany in 2015 , thousands of people entered Germany via the border crossing. Austria lets them take buses right up to the border.

Achleiten / Danube gauge

Here at Achleiten, at the customs station at river kilometer 2,223.05 on the Austrian side or river kilometer 2,223.10 on the Bavarian side, is the level that measures the water level of the Danube when it enters Austria. It is also the first level that measures the water flow of the Danube and Inn together: Passau measures 2 levels, one for the Danube ( Passau Ilzstadt / Danube ), one for the Inn ( Passau Ingling / Inn ).

The level was set up in 1947, the standard height is 288.04  m above sea level. A. or 287.7  m above sea level. NN . Since 1955 it has been in the area of influence of the Jochenstein reservoir , so it only shows flood waves.

Much more important for Austrian hydrography is therefore the Jochenstein point (corresponds to the Engelhartszell gauge below), where two of the major river areas in Austria are also divided, the Danube below Jochenstein  (DUJ) for the course of the Danube and Danube to Jochenstein  (DBJ) for the Inn and Salzach and the upper reaches of other rivers to the Danube in North Tyrol. The few Sauwald streams to the Danube between Passau and Jochenstein are counted as the second. At the Achleiten gauge, the catchment area of the Danube is around 76,655 km 2 , for the Danube to Jochenstein it is around 77,085 km 2 .
