Peterskirche (Basel)
The Peterskirche is a sacred building in the Swiss city of Basel . It is consecrated to St. Peter and has been used as an evangelical reformed church since 1529 after conversion and renovations .
location
The church, which faces east-west, is located on a rock in the old town of Grossbasel , where Petersgasse and Kellergässlein meet.
Building history
At this point there was already a previous church building, which probably came from the 9th century. Until 1233, the church at that time was expanded and renewed as a parish church and monastery . The Basel earthquake of 1356 caused severe damage to the building and it had to be rebuilt. The choir was redesigned.
The main part, called “Leutkirche”, was planned according to the guidelines of the mendicant churches and was completed before 1388. The choir stalls are dated to 1494.
Furnishing
Leutkirche
A spacious main nave with whitewashed walls is separated from two side aisles by light sandstone arches. The walls are richly decorated with picture cycles and wall paintings. In the south aisle there is the work of the Entombment of Christ, created around 1830, and the well-preserved mural The Annunciation to Mary (around 1400) in the “Keppenbach Chapel” . The pulpit was built around 1620 and is attributed to Franz Pergo .
organ
The organ , which goes back to Johann Andreas Silbermann , houses a work by Neidhart & Lhôte built in 1968. The slider chest instrument has 32 registers on three manuals and a pedal. The actions are mechanical.
