Philippe-Patrick Starck (born January 18, 1949 in Paris ) is a French designer and architect .

Life

Philippe Starck studied at the École Camondo in Paris. In 1965 he won the furniture competition “La Vilette” and in 1968 founded a company for inflatable objects. In 1971 he became artistic director at the Pierre Cardin studio . In 1980 he founded Starck Products .

In 1982 he designed the private rooms of the then President François Mitterrand in the Élysée Palace . He became a celebrated star designer of the 1980s, especially in the USA and Japan. The interior design for the Café Costes in Paris (1984, closed 1994) became world famous.

Career

From restaurants to hotels, from furniture to room modules, the French designer Philippe Starck has left his mark on more than 10,000 designs. While working for Adidas founded Starck his first industrial design company , Starck Product , which he later on the novel by Philip K. Dick in Ubik renamed. He started to work with manufacturers in Italy (Driade), Alessi , Kartell and also internationally. Among the manufacturers were Drimmer in Austria , Vitra in Switzerland and Disform in Spain . His concept of democratic design led him to focus on mass-produced consumer goods rather than one-offs, looking for ways to reduce costs and improve the quality of mass-market goods. In 1983, the then French President, François Mitterrand Starck, on the recommendation of his Minister of Culture , chose Jack Lang to renovate the President's private apartments in the Élysée . The following year he designed the Café Costes. Starck's design expanded to furniture, decoration, architecture, street furniture, industry ( wind turbines , photo booths ), bathroom fittings, kitchens, floor and wall coverings, lighting, household appliances, office equipment such as staplers, utensils, dishes, clothing, accessories, toys, glassware, graphic design and publishing , food and land, sea, air and space vehicles. In 2018, he started designing the interiors for the residential module of the world's first commercial space station for space company Axiom Space , which is due to open in 2020.

Private life

Starck has five children from four marriages. His daughter Ara Starck is a painter and comes from her marriage to the lawyer Brigitte Starck. With his second wife, the French Patricia, he has the son Oa, and with his third wife, the American Nori, the son Lago and the daughter K. Starck claims to select the names of his children at random with the help of a computer program . He has been married to Jasmine Abdellatif since 2007.

Works

Philippe Starck often uses organic shapes. One of the most famous product designs is the one-piece, rocket-shaped lemon squeezer Juicy Salif (1990) made of aluminum for the Italian manufacturer Alessi . It received international attention and was given terms such as “design classics”. The focus was not on the functional qualities of a lemon squeezer: the pointed feet dig into the worktop and there is no sieve to catch the stones.

Other well-known works are the Motó 6.5 motorcycle from the manufacturer Aprilia , fittings and shower collections for Axor, the designer brand from Hansgrohe SE, Starck Eyes glasses by Alain Mikli , a shoe collection with the sporting goods manufacturer Puma , sanitary ware for Duravit and bathtubs for Hoesch , the armchair / the Bubble Club sofa and the Louis Ghost armchairs for Kartell , lamps for FLOS or a computer mouse for Microsoft that is suitable for both left and right-handers. In 2008 he presented a windmill and a modular shower collection at the International Furniture Fair in Milan . The motor yacht A was designed by Starck in 2008. He also designed the headphones from the French manufacturer Parrot , which are sold under the product name Zik .

According to his own statement, his design principle is the principle of reduction, or "ethics of omission", he avoids unnecessary decor.

In April 2012, Starck announced that he was working on a “revolutionary” product for Apple ; It was later announced that it was a luxury yacht for Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who died in 2011 .

In 2019 the project of the so-called "AI chair" became known. A team from the US 3D software expert Autodesk and Philippe Stark have jointly created - according to the information provided by those involved - the first “ chair jointly developed by artificial intelligence and humans”, the so-called AIChair .

architecture

As part of his role as an architect, Philipe Starck deals with the drafting , creation and construction of buildings , as well as with the aesthetic engagement of people with the built space .

The buildings that he planned in Japan from 1989 onwards ran counter to traditional forms. The first, Nani Nani , in Tokyo , was described as a biomorphic scale. A year later, he designed Tokyo’s Asahi Beer Hall , a building topped with a golden flame. The Le Baron Vert office complex in Osaka followed in 1992 . In France, he planned to expand the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris (1998). In 1991 he designed one of the pavilions for the new Groninger Museum . Starck also planned affordable and customizable prefabricated PATH homes. He designed the infrastructure for the Port Adriano harbor in the southwest bay of Palma de Mallorca and was artistic director for the interior. It opened in April 2012.

Starck designed the flagship stores in London, Los Angeles and Paris for the Cologne-based Taschen-Verlag . With the project developer John Hitchcox, Starck has been selling residential properties worldwide under the Yoo brand since 1999.

Architecture (exteriors)
