Sergio Pignedoli
Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli (born June 4, 1910 in Felina near Castelnovo ne 'Monti , Province of Reggio Emilia , Italy , † June 15, 1980 in Reggio Emilia ) was a Vatican diplomat and later Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Sergio Pignedoli studied philosophy and catholic theology at the seminary of Reggio Emilia . He received his doctorate in Medieval Studies from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) in Milan , from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome he received his doctorate in theology and from the Gregorian he also graduated in church history .
On April 1, 1933, he received the sacrament of ordination . He then worked for almost two years as a sub-rain of the Reggio Emilia seminary before being appointed chaplain of UCSC in Milan in 1934. From 1940 to 1943 he took part in the Second World War as a military chaplain. In 1943 he entered the service of the Vatican State Secretariat and at the same time took on the task of the chaplain of Catholic Action and the scouts for all of Italy. In 1945 he received the title of Papal Secret Chamberlain and in 1949 that of His Holiness House Prelate .
Before and during the holy year 1950 he worked as secretary of the planning commission.
On December 22, 1950, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Iconium and it appointed apostolic nuncio in Bolivia . He received his episcopal consecration on February 11, 1951, the Patriarch of Venice , Adeodato Giovanni Cardinal Piazza ; Co- consecrators were the official in the State Secretariat of the Vatican and later Cardinal Valerio Valeri as well as his home bishop Beniamino Socche (it) , Bishop of Reggio Emilia . In 1954 he was apostolic nuncio in Venezuela for a year . From 1955 Sergio Pignedoli worked as auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Milan . Pope John XXIII appointed him in 1960 as Apostolic Envoy for West and Central Africa , Pope Paul VI. entrusted him with the same task in Canada in 1964 .
From 1962 to 1965 Sergio Pignedoli took part in the Second Vatican Council . In 1966 he was president of the Extraordinary Assembly of the Vietnamese Bishops' Conference on a papal mandate . In 1967 he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .
Pope Paul VI accepted him on March 30, 1973 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Giorgio in Velabro in the college of cardinals and in the same year made him head of the secretariat for non-Christians . He took both the conclave in August and at the in October 1978 in part, in which I. John Paul or John Paul II. Was elected Pope. Before the first conclave, Cardinal Pignedoli was considered papabile . From 1979 until his death he was the longest serving cardinal deacon and thus cardinal protodeacon .
Sergio Pignedoli died on June 15, 1980 in Rome and was buried in the parish church of Felina di Castelnovo ne 'Monti.
