Pontius Pilatus - governor of horror (original title: Ponzio Pilato ) is a French-Italian sandal film from 1962. It is about the Roman governor Pontius Pilate .
action
Pontius Pilate has to answer to Caligula and the Roman Senate for having oppressed the Jews and, contrary to Jewish tradition, to have levied the temple tax from them to satisfy his greed and vanity.
In a flashback one learns Pilate's story:
When he is greeted by Caiaphas on his arrival in Judea , an attempt by Barabbas on Pilate and his soldiers fails . Pilate was immediately informed of the situation in Judea: Troublemaker Barabbas kept escaping the Roman soldiers; King Herod Antipas of Galilee is concerned about the effect of a simple preacher who is followed by more and more people. In Samaria, on the other hand, there is a shortage of water, but the High Council refuses to help finance the cost of an aqueduct . The aqueduct could not be financed with the temple tax, as this only served the glory of God. However, Pilate enforces the construction of the aqueduct and imposes an additional fee on the Samaritans for this project.
When Pilate arrests the money changer Aaron El Mesin, who is accused of being a leader in cheating people when changing money, his daughter Sarah refuses to betray her father and is arrested herself.
Sarah wants to stab Pilate in revenge for the planned arrest of her father; but she is released by Pilate. Pilate and Sarah get closer; she tries to bring her faith closer to him. In the high council, however, there is resistance to the construction of the aqueduct, in return Pilate has half of the temple tax confiscated to finance the project. Caiaphas warns Pilate against this measure; With difficulty, Pilate can end the slaves' refusal to work. When Pilate's wife Claudia comes to visit, she hears that he has a lover.
Aaron is released and is angry that this was only possible because Pilate and Sarah love each other. Claudia is impressed by Jesus' words that only true love can forgive and Pilate forgives his infidelity.
After an attack by Barabbas, there is a conflict between Pilate and the Jewish people over the practice of their religion. Pilate wants to use force of arms, but lets himself be persuaded to let the people believe and give them protection.
As Barabbas becomes more and more dangerous, Aaron reveals his whereabouts to the Romans. A fight ensues between the slaves employed at the aqueduct and the Romans.
As Barabbas' raids become more cruel, Jesus moves into Jerusalem. In exchange for 30 pieces of silver, Judas leads the high priests to Jesus. Jesus is interrogated by the high priests; Pilate sentenced him to death despite Claudia's warnings. At the hour of Jesus' death there is an earthquake in which Claudia perishes.
Caligula threatens Pilate that his fate depends solely on his judgment. Pilate, however, replies that his judge is out of this world.
Reviews
The Lexicon of International Films wrote that the production was an "imaginative attempt at a character and development study of Pontius Pilate in the style of the great Bible films."
“The motivation for the conversion of the governor as well as that of the high priest Caiaphas and Judas does not remain uninteresting. In addition, however, there is solid kitsch and an unenlightened and therefore absurd blossoms-driving tendency towards symbolism. "
