The 2019 presidential election in Indonesia took place on April 17, 2019, along with the parliamentary elections and numerous regional and local elections. It was won by the ruling President Joko Widodo , against whom Prabowo Subianto had competed.

background

After the fall of the dictator Suharto , Indonesia turned into a presidential republic . Since the president was appointed by the military until 2004, this is only the fourth presidential election in Indonesia since independence in 1945. Eligible to vote are people aged 17 and over who have electronic proof of identity. In some remote parts of the country, such as the restless province of Papua , many eligible voters do not have such an ID. The opposition criticized irregularities, about 17 million voters are registered with the same dates of birth, for some the registered date of birth is in the 1st century. Almost 193 million people are registered as eligible to vote.

The island nation's economy is growing, especially tourism and the export of palm oil , coal , metals and natural gas . However, prosperity is unevenly distributed, around a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line , a particularly large number of them in agriculture.

Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world, 87 percent of its citizens are Muslims . Although church and state are officially separated, religion was an important issue in the election campaign.

Candidates

The same two candidates ran again as for the 2014 presidential election :

  • Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, is the incumbent President of Indonesia. In 2014 he started a program for plurality and against social injustice. Many see him failing to implement his election promises at the time. He is also accused of having done too little for human rights in the country. Numerous infrastructure projects such as the new subway in the capital Jakarta are cited as successes of his tenure . He elected the conservative cleric Ma'ruf Amin as a vice presidential candidate.
  • Prabowo Subianto, is a retired general and Suharto's son-in-law. He advocates a conservative, Islamic law-and-order policy . His vice-presidential candidate is the wealthy investment banker Sandiaga Uno. Prabowo accused President Widodo of adopting overly secular attitudes and disregarding Muslim principles. If he was elected, he specifically promised the support of the farmers.

Result

Majorities in the provinces: Jokowi-Amin Prabowo-Sandi

Majorities in the administrative districts and cities: Jokowi-Amin Prabowo-Sandi

Post-election surveys indicated an election victory for incumbent Jokowi, opinion research institutes saw him with around 55 percent of the vote. Widodo declared himself the winner the day after the election, but this was not recognized by opponent Prabowo, just like in the previous election.

The final result was announced on May 21, 2019. Accordingly, Joko Widodo won with 55.5 percent of the vote. In total, more than 154 million people took part in the election.
