Raach is part of the Gösting district of the Styrian capital Graz . The place is the northernmost Graz settlement on the right bank of the Mur and has 420 inhabitants (as of 2013).

geography

Raach lies at around 375  m above sea level. A. in the Middle Murtal , an epigenetic breakthrough valley , in the Gösting district. It forms the northernmost settlement on the right bank of the Mur and thus the western half of Graz. In the west and south, the place is dominated by the Raacher Kogel and the Göstinger ruins mountain ( 696  m ), which significantly limits the effective amount of sunshine . The elevations are made up of Devonian limestone and dolomites and belong to the Graz Paleozoic . The impact slope of the Raachleiten is divided by several small ditches, each of which has flat cones in the transition to the valley floor. These combine to form a trail made of loess and debris , on which the Raach settlement is located. Two karst springs arise in the rubble , which together with a well ensure the water supply of the place. As before, Raach is not connected to the water network of the city of Graz.

Climatopically , Raach and the Raachleiten are in the zone of the nocturnal Murtal downwash . At the southern end of the village, which is characterized by insufficient tanning, jet effects can already occur.

history

Christ the King's Church in front of the Raachleiten

Raach was a Slavic settlement area and was called Am Rachperg from 1486/87 (later Rach , see e.g. Franziszeischer Cadastre ). The village, which was dominated by agriculture at that time, belonged to the parish of Gratwein until the 20th century and then fell to the municipality of Gösting, which was incorporated into Graz in 1938. Due to its proximity to the banks of the Mur, there have often been large-scale floods in the past , for example in 1938.

In 1945 a barrack church was built , which was inaugurated in 1964 as Christ the King's Church in a modern architectural style . After the Second World War , two graves with two dead each were found in Raach. They were Hungarian-Jewish slave laborers who had been murdered in the course of a death march from Graz to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1951 a local war memorial was erected. As a result, the Raach-Gösting Comradeship Association was founded, which , according to its own statements, is supported by 25 percent of the local population.

Economy and Infrastructure

Plabutsch tunnel ventilation "Green Elephants", seen from the maiden jump

Due to its topographical location, Raach does not look like a part of Graz and is often mistaken for part of Judendorf-Straßengel . In addition to the church, there is a primary school and a dog school as well as an ice stock club (ESV Raach) in the village . Apart from a few small businesses , it is mostly a housing estate with limited functionality. The zoning plan 4.0 of the city of Graz shows some free building plots in addition to agricultural areas and commercial areas in the north.

In terms of traffic, Raach can be reached via the L302 , which connects Graz-Gösting and Judendorf. The bus routes of the Verbund lines 120, 121 and 131 run over it. The Pyhrn Autobahn (A 9) touches the town on the east side, but the accesses and exits here are geared towards Graz traffic and are irrelevant for Raach. The north portal of the Plabutsch tunnel is located south-east of the town center , and immediately above it are two striking ventilation structures made of exposed and shotcrete by architect Eilfried Huth , which are also known as green elephants because of their appearance . The Graz-Nord road maintenance depot is located at the northern end of the village . The railway line in the direction of Bruck an der Mur also runs east of the village . An initiative for an S-Bahn station on the part of ÖBB failed in 2013 due to insufficient customer potential.

The right bank variant of the Murradweg , which is also approved for mopeds , leads through Raach . Due to the course under the Jungfernsprung , this was endangered by falling rocks until the nets were set up in 2005 .
