Radiofabrik 107.5 , Freier Rundfunk Salzburg, is a community radio in Salzburg ( Austria ) and the largest free radio in Western Austria .

history

Matchbox with "Pirate Radio Bongo 500" advertisement, 1992

Some of the founding circle of the radio factory - like the later managing director Wolfgang Hirner - were on the air with an illegal pirate radio ( Radio Bongo 500 ) as early as 1992 .

Immediately after the fall of the Austrian broadcasting monopoly in 1998, the Radiofabrik was the second Austrian free radio on air (after Radio Helsinki in Graz in 1995 ), albeit only as a five-hour broadcast window with the commercial provider Radio Arabella .

Daily broadcasting began in January 2002 in a provider association with Objektwerbung GmbH . After financial difficulties, the commercial partner stopped the moderated radio operation in October 2003, whereupon the radio factory received the full license.

In the early days, the station was operated from a container studio, but a professional infrastructure has been available since 2005. The office, studio, production and workshop space are housed in the largest autonomous cultural center in Western Austria, ARGE-Kultur Salzburg .

In February 2009, the Radiofabrik started a campaign to introduce fee splitting in the state of Salzburg.

In April 2011, KommAustria extended the station's license for a further ten years until 2021.

In 2012 the radio factory founded the television station FS1 .

The first German outdoor studio of the radio factory was opened in July 2015.

The second outdoor studio of the station went into operation in Zell am See in 2019.

Program and concept

The editor-in-chief was the award-winning journalist Georg Wimmer until September 2012 ; the program has been coordinated by the project manager Eva Schmidhuber ever since.

Open access

As a non-commercial , free radio , the Radiofabrik is open to all interested people and groups, especially those who seem underrepresented in the commercial and public media. There are programs by and for people over 50, programs by and for people under 18 and programs in more than ten different languages. The Radiofabrik can thus be regarded as the broadcaster with the greatest diversity of opinion in Salzburg.

Anyone who becomes a member of the association and completes a basic workshop in which media law, studio technology and live operations are taught can receive a broadcast slot. The design of the content is the responsibility of the person responsible for the shipment. Programs with racist , sexist , violence-glorifying or anti- democratic content and religious propaganda have no place in the program .

More than 350 voluntary producers with more than 200 programs broadcast in open access .

Professional editorial offices

Studio discussion on the Salzburg municipal council election, Timna Pachner, Daniel Bergerweiss - unheard of! -Editorial (2019)

The station has been running semi-professional newsrooms since it was founded. For Format Magazin um 5 , an employed management team was supplemented by a team of editorial internships. It aired several times a week and was discontinued in 2015 for financial reasons.

With the support of the City of Salzburg, a so-called teaching editorial team started in autumn 2018, which annually trains a group of volunteers as journalists. These produce the regional news format unheard of! - the local information provider .

There is another professional editorial team for music selection and self-produced music programs on the radio.

education

The radio has developed extensive media education courses and workshops. According to their own statements, these are the largest offer of non-commercial broadcasting in Austria and range from training courses in moderation, editing and promotion to journalistic courses. More than 1,400 people completed the courses in 2019.

organization

Radiofabrik Board of Directors, from left to right. Oliver Baumann, Eva-Maria Kubin, Wolfgang Stöger, Su Karrer, Wolfgang Hirner (2015)

Until 2009 the radio factory had two organizational structures: the "Verein Freier Rundfunk Salzburg" - in which all program producers and sponsors at institutional level are members - was the operation of the radio. An infrastructure company (Sendeanlagen GesmbH) that held the broadcasting license was 100% owned by the association. Since October 2009 the association has been the legal successor of the GesmbH.

On the board of the association (as of 6/2019) are the pedagogue and journalist Oliver Baumann as chairman , the scientists Su Karrer and Eva-Maria Kubin (both University of Salzburg ), the cultural manager Simone Seymer, the entrepreneur and founder of the radio factory Wolfgang Hirner, and the public accountant Wolfgang Stöger.

The radio factory was managed by founder Wolfgang Hirner until the beginning of 2007. The adult educator Andreas Wagner was appointed commercial manager in 2007. Since March 2008 the media manager and artist Alf Altendorf - formerly working for TIV , involved in the establishment of Okto - has been managing director, since January 2018 together with the "managing director program" Eva Schmidhuber.

financing

The operation of the station is financed through grants from the public purse as well as through self-generated income.

Project work

The local anchoring of the radio factory to cultural sites and NGOs in Salzburg goes hand in hand with a European orientation through participation in EU projects.

Media educational work is becoming more and more important for the radio factory. This found expression in the Interreg IIIA project " EuRegio Medienzentrum" (2006–2009), in which Aktion Film Salzburg and the Traunstein District Office were involved as partners.
