The place was first mentioned by name in 1260, when Burgrave Konrad I donated the church in Obernzenn and the village of Rappenau to the Teutonic Order . During the Thirty Years War the place was largely spared.
Towards the end of the 18th century there were 18 properties in Rappenau (7 half courtyards, 8 quarter courtyards, 1 Sölde , 1 fiefdom, community shepherd's house). The high court exercised the Obervogteiamt Virnsberg . The Teutonic Order Coming Virnsberg held the village and community rulership as well as the lordship over all properties .
As part of the municipal edict, Rappenau was assigned to the Oberaltenbernheim tax district formed in 1808 . It also belonged to the rural community of Oberaltenbernheim formed in 1811 . On January 1, 1972, Rappenau was reclassified to Obernzenn as part of the regional reform .
