history

The place was first mentioned by name as "Breitenawe" in 1259, when Burgrave Konrad I bought the uffenheim part of the Veste Virnsberg , which also belonged to Breitenawe, which then became the "villa nostra" of the burgraves.

Towards the end of the 18th century there were twelve properties in Breitenau. The high court exercised the Obervogteiamt Virnsberg . The village and community rule was held by the Teutonic Order Coming Virnsberg . The landlords were the Teutonic Order Coming Virnsberg (church, 4 courtyards, 1 three-quarter courtyard, 1 half courtyard, 1 quarter courtyard, 1 blacksmith's shop, 2 sanctuary, community shepherd's house) and the Unterzenn manor (1 half courtyard).

As part of the municipal edict, Breitenau was assigned to the Oberaltenbernheim tax district, formed in 1808 . It also belonged to the rural community of Oberaltenbernheim formed in 1811 . The voluntary jurisdiction and the police for an estate had until 1848 the patrimonial Unternzenn held. On January 1, 1972, Breitenau was incorporated into Obernzenn as part of the regional reform .
