The re: publica is a conference about Web 2.0 , especially weblogs , social media and the digital society . The name is derived from the word " republic " and the Latin term res publica (literally translated: "public matter"). The re: publica has been held annually in Berlin since 2007 . Over three days, various topics will be dealt with in lectures and workshops , from media and culture to politics and technology to entertainment. Some lectures and discussions will be broadcast live on the internet as audio or video streams .

The organizers are the operators of the German blogs Spreeblick and Netzpolitik.org , who founded republica GmbH for the 2011 event . The series of events is funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Federal Agency for Civic Education , among others .

re: publica'11

Re: publica'11 took place from April 13th to 15th, 2011 at the same venues as last year. It had around 3,000 participants in 169 lectures and workshops. The proportion of women among the speakers could be increased to 30 percent. At the start of the conference, Markus Beckedahl announced the founding of the “Digitale Gesellschaft” association, which, following the example of Greenpeace , would like to put network policy issues at the center of social discussion, away from the interests of the “ nerds ”. The topics included the political activities of the Internet collective Anonymous , the degree of desired privacy or openness in social networks and the initiative of the Wikimedia Germany association to make the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia the first digital world cultural heritage . Daniel Domscheit-Berg explained the OpenLeaks project , which has been delayed due to extensive preparatory work, is now largely technically complete and aims to become a politically neutral alternative to WikiLeaks .

re: publica'12 - Act! on

The re: publica'12 took place under the motto “Act! On” from May 2nd to 4th, 2012 in the Station-Berlin , part of the Berlin Dresden train station . Around 350 speakers from over 30 countries appeared on eight stages. The organizers made the decision in advance to enlarge the re: publica. For this purpose, the event was relocated to the STATION and "re: publica GmbH" was founded for financial security. 30-40 people were employed full-time to plan and hold the conference. For the first time, the re: publica was also recognized as an educational event, so that conference participants could apply for educational leave.

The media partner Spiegel Online offered a live stream of the main stage on spiegel.de. The Action Man donated to accessibility for five lectures font and sign language interpreters .

A highlight of the event was the interview with Steffen Seibert , who reported on his Twitter activities as a government spokesman. The EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes sparked greater media coverage when she said the sentence “Don't worry about ACTA anymore ” because she does not assume that the controversial EU agreement will get the necessary majority in the EU Parliament. She asked for a solution without ACTA or SOPA .

criticism

The blogger Sascha Pallenberg criticized after re: publica'16 that Adblock Plus was the main sponsor of the conference this year. For example, Pixi books were distributed to advertise the browser plug-in. During a presentation by Adblock Plus together with Flattr, it was not evident that partners would pay re: publica money for such appearances (this was also not evident from other partners). He also expressed the suspicion that the panel existed because of personal acquaintances. The latter was denied by the re: publica, as program decisions are not made by individuals. For future events, however, a code of conduct for cooperation with sponsors and partners should be developed, whereby partner content should be better identified and advertising materials should be checked more carefully.

The (visible) participation of the Bundeswehr in re: publica 2018 was not wanted by the organizers. The reason lies in the rejection of their advertising and the search for young people, as well as the presence of army uniforms itself, which would irritate the visitors. Without a uniform, however, the Bundeswehr would be allowed access. There are dissenting voices who consider the exclusion of the Bundeswehr to be inappropriate. There it says that the Bundeswehr is an integral part of Germany and it is noted that other state institutions, such as the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , are nonetheless approved as partners of the conference. This also led to an unusual reaction in front of the digital conference: soldiers of the German armed forces advertised their participation in uniform under the slogan “Green also belongs to colorful”.

Conferences outside of Berlin

A re: publica took place in Dublin on October 20, 2016 and September 7 and 8, 2017 and in Thessaloniki from September 11 to 13, 2017. From December 14 to 15, 2018, the first re: publica took place in Accra instead of.

In the USA, from October 2018 to March 2019, the re: publica took place at five locations within one Germany year. The Germany Year was organized by the Federal Foreign Office , the Goethe Institute and the Federation of German Industries (BDI).
