Renato Cioni

Renato Cioni (born April 15, 1929 in Portoferraio , Elba Island , † March 4, 2014 ibid) was an Italian opera singer with a tenor voice .

Life

Origin and early years

Cioni came from a family of fishermen . He studied singing and music at the “Luigi Cherubini” Conservatory in Florence . In 1956 he won the “Adriano Belli” singing competition at the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Spoleto and then made his debut there in the same year as an opera singer with the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor . In 1957 he sang the role of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in a TV production by RAI ; his partner as Cio-Cio-San was Anna Moffo . In 1958 he sang at the invitation of the composer Gian Carlo Menottiat the Spoleto Festival the tenor role of Marcello di Bruges in Donizetti's unfinished opera Il duca d'Alba under the musical direction of Thomas Schippers . 1959 followed a tour with this opera through the United States , with appearances in Philadelphia and at Carnegie Hall in New York City . In 1959 he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor . He then returned to Italy, where his career quickly developed.

Guest performances in Italy

In March 1961 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly . In 1961 he took over the role of Paolo in Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste . In January 1962 he sang Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Teatro Regio in Parma . In 1963 he appeared at the Teatro Massimo Palermo (in I Capuleti ei Montecchi ) and at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples (in Parisina d'Este ). In 1964 he sang the role of Alfredo in La traviata at the Scala alongside Mirella Freni (Violetta) and Mario Sereni (Germont-père); it conducted by Herbert von Karajan . In later performances of this production, Anna Moffo was his partner. In 1974 he appeared again at La Scala in Milan as Stewa in Jenůfa ; his partners were Grace Bumbry (title role) and Magda Olivero (as Kostelnička, the sexton).

In 1966 he appeared at the Festival in the Arena di Verona as Cavaradossi in Tosca . In 1969 he made a guest appearance at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino . He appeared several times at the Rome Opera House : 1970, 1972 (as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor ) and 1976 as Stewa in Jenůfa . In 1970/1971 he sang at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari , in 1972 at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo (in Parisina d'Este ) and at the opera festival in the Caracalla Baths (as Cavaradossi).

Guest performances in Europe and overseas

As Edgardo, also as Cavaradossi in Tosca , Cioni made guest appearances in Graz in 1960 . In 1962 he appeared at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels , and in 1963 at the Monte Carlo Opera House (as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly ). In 1964 he sang Cavaradossi at Covent Garden Opera in London ; his partners were Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi . In 1969 he sang Cavaradossi there again. Other roles at Covent Garden were: Herzog in Rigoletto (1964), Gabriele Adorno in Simone Boccanegra (1965) and Pinkerton (1970). In 1965 he made his debut at the Grand Opéra Paris as Cavaradossi, again with Maria Callas as a partner.

In January 1965 he appeared for the first time at the Vienna State Opera ; there he made his debut as Gustaf III. in Un ballo in maschera . Other roles at the Vienna State Opera were: Alfredo in La traviata (March 1966), Herzog in Rigoletto (April 1973) and Rodolfo in Luisa Miller (April 1975). In 1979 he made a guest appearance at the Tours Opera House .

In September 1967 he appeared again at the San Francisco Opera (as Enzo in La Gioconda at the War Memorial Opera House); 1968 followed a guest appearance at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (as Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera ). In the 1969/70 season he sang the role of Pollione in the opera Norma at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City ; his partners were Joan Sutherland (Norma) and Marilyn Horne (Adalgisa). He also made guest appearances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1969; as Alfredo in La traviata ) and in Tokyo (1971; as Pinkerton).

Private and death

Cioni was married. His marriage to his wife Loretta had four children, two sons and two daughters. He lived in Portoferraio in the Piazza Dante Alighieri. On the afternoon of March 3, 2014, Cioni was admitted to the Portoferraio Hospital (Ospedale di Portoferraio); He died there in the early morning of March 4, 2014, around 1:30 a.m.

For the record , Cioni only recorded two of his opera roles; the number of his studio recordings is therefore very small. In 1961 he sang the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor for Decca . His partner was Joan Sutherland, conductor Sir John Pritchard . Also in 1961 he took on the role of the Duke in Rigoletto for Decca ; here too, Joan Sutherland was his partner.
