Rokycany (German Rokitzan , Rokytzan , older also Rockizan ) is a district town in the West Bohemian Pilsner Kreis in the Czech Republic with 14,192 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) . The city is located 19 kilometers east of Pilsen .
history
Rokycany originated in the 12th century on the road from Prague to Pilsen from a village owned by the Prague bishop . In 1406 it received city rights and also flourished thanks to its location on Goldenen Straße . After the Hussite Revolution, it fell first to local nobles, then to the King of Bohemia . From 1584 Rokycany had the status of a free royal city , which it lost again in the Thirty Years War . In 1784 the city burned down completely and was rebuilt. Steel mills and other industries have existed here since the second half of the 19th century.
