Roman Sergejewitsch Kostomarow ( Russian Роман Сергеевич Костомаров , born February 8, 1977 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian figure skater who started in ice dancing .

Career

Roman Kostomarov did not start figure skating until he was nine years old. Before that he was a swimmer. However, when there was no development in swimming, his mother took him to an ice rink. At the age of eleven he was discovered there by a trainer and brought to ice dance. In 1996 Kostomarow and his then ice dance partner Jekaterina Dawidowa became junior world champion in ice dancing. Nevertheless, this partnership broke up.

In 1998 Tatjana Nawka and Roman Kostomarow ran their first season together. They were trained by Natalja Linitschuk and Gennady Karponosov in Newark , Delaware . At Natalja Linitschuk's instigation, Roman Kostomarow changed partners and henceforth trained with Anna Semenowitsch , a former partner of Vladimir Fyodorow . In addition, Tatjana Nawka married the trainer and former ice dancer Alexander Schulin in 2000 and took a baby break. Their daughter Sasha was born in May 2000.

After Roman Kostomarow broke up with Anna Semenowitsch due to unsuccessfulness and Tatjana Nawka had ended her maternity leave, both started together again. From then on, they trained with Nawka's husband Alexander Schulin and with Jelena Tschaikowskaja in Hackensack , New Jersey .

In 2003 Nawka and Kostomarow went for the first time as Russian champions . At the European Championships they won their first bronze medal at a major international championship.

The 2003/2004 season began with victories in all Grand Prix competitions in which they took part, namely Skate Canada , Cup of Russia and Cup of China . They also won the Grand Prix final . They also defended their title at the Russian championships. They became European champions for the first time in Budapest and world champions for the first time in Dortmund . Thus, they won all competitions in which they competed this season.

After Nawka and Kostomarow had defended their title at the Grand Prix final in the 2004/2005 season, they also defended their European championship title in Turin and their world championship title in Moscow .

In the 2005/2006 season, Nawka and Kostomarow won the Grand Prix final for the third time in a row. In Lyon they became European champions for the third time in a row. At the end of their careers they won Olympic gold in Turin . At the Olympic Games, the compulsory dance and the original dance were characterized by an unusually large number of mistakes and falls by medal candidates for ice dancing. After Nawka / Kostomarow had taken second place in the compulsory dance, they won both the original dance and the compulsory dance and thus became Olympic champions. They had made the fewest mistakes across all three sub-competitions.

Kostomarow married the multiple Austrian champion Julia Lautowa in June 2004 , but the couple later divorced. Kostomarow has been engaged to the ice dancer Oxana Domnina since 2010 , and their daughter was born in January 2011.
