Rudolf Koelman (born October 2, 1959 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch violinist and professor at the Zurich University of the Arts . He currently lives in Winterthur .

Koelman began studying the violin with Jan Bor in Amsterdam in 1966, and from 1972 he continued this at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Herman Krebbers . After graduation, Koelman was one of Jascha Heifetz's last students at the University of Southern California in 1978 and studied in Los Angeles until 1981 .

In 1984 Koelman accepted a professorship at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory in Austria , which he held until 1989. In addition, from 1987 he was appointed professor at the Winterthur Conservatory and Music Academy and between 1996 and 1999 was the first concertmaster of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra . From 2000 to 2005 he was employed at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . In 2005 Koelman took over a professorship at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) as well as the management of the ZHdK Strings, a string orchestra made up of ZHdK students. In addition, Koelman is active as a soloist, visiting professor and juror.

Koelman performed as a soloist with u. a .: Amsterdams Sinfonietta, Bern Symphony Orchestra , Bruckner Orchester Linz , Haydn Sinfonietta Vienna , Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck , WDR Funkhausorchester , Korean Broadcasting System Symphony Orchestra KBS, Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne , Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra , Stuttgart Philharmonic , South West German Philharmonie , Philharmonieorchester Tokyo , Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur and Zurich Chamber Orchestra .

As a soloist, concertmaster or chamber musician, he has performed with musicians and conductors such as Joshua Bell , Douglas Boyd , Ronald Brautigam , Rudolf Buchbinder , Riccardo Chailly , Sir Colin Davis , Richard Dufallo , Thomas Demenga , Sir John Eliot Gardiner , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Philippe Herreweghe , Godfried Hoogeveen , Heinz Holliger , Maris Janssons , Ton Koopman , Radu Lupu , Nikita Magaloff , Orfeo Mandozzi , Shlomo Mintz , Viktoria Mullova , Roger Norrington , Kurt Sanderling , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Duncan McTier , Raphael Wallfisch , Thomas Zehetmair , Frank Peter Zimmermann and Jaap van Zweden .

Rudolf Koelman owns a violin by Giovanni Francesco Pressenda from 1829 ( Turin / Italy ) and plays the Woolhouse Stradivarius from 1720.

Sound carrier

The three sonatas by Johannes Brahms , the two sonatas by Sergej Prokofjew and Le Quattro Stagioni by Antonio Vivaldi were recorded on CD . The best known is the live recording of the 24 Capricci by Niccolò Paganini from 1996.
