Sam Benjamin McCallum (born September 2, 2000 in Canterbury ) is an English football player who has been under contract with the first division Norwich City since January 2020 .

Career

Sam McCallum was born in Canterbury and grew up in the coastal town of Herne Bay . He played for the youth teams Charlton Athletics , Gillingham FC and Chelsea FC before returning to his home country for amateur club Herne Bay in 2017 . In 2019, he joined the V9 Academy of England international Jamie Vardy , which is designed to allow amateur players a professional contract.

On August 9, 2018, he moved to third division club Coventry City , where he signed a three-year deal and was scheduled as a fourth option in left full defense . He therefore started the 2018/19 season in the Sky Blues U23 team , but was always in the matchday squad in the three group games of the EFL Trophy . On November 13, 2018, he made his debut in the 2-0 away defeat by Cheltenham Town in the third and final group game of the Trophy in the first team, when he came on for Brandon Mason in the 55th minute . McCallum convinced head coach Mark Robbins in training and he gave him the opportunity to collect playing time in League One for the first time in December 2018. On December 29, 2018 (25th matchday), he made his first appearance in the English third division in a 1-0 home win against Southend United , when he came back for Mason in the 82nd minute. In the next league games he was used regularly, but returned to the U23 in February. In this 2018/19 season , he played seven league games for the first team.

In the next 2019/20 season, McCallum developed into a regular player and was increasingly used as a left winger . On November 9, 2019, he scored his first goal for Coventry City in a 2-0 away win against Colchester United in the first round of the FA Cup .

On 31 January 2020 Sam McCallum moved for a fee in the amount of 3.5 million pounds for first division side Norwich City , where he signed a 4-1 / 2-year contract. As part of the transfer, it was agreed that he would be loaned back to Coventry City by the end of the season. In the 2019/20 season he played a total of 35 competitive games in which he scored three goals and as many assists. With the Sky Blues he won the championship, which also enabled the team to move up to the second-rate EFL Championship .
