Geographical location
The joint municipality of Hankensbüttel is located in the northwest of the Gifhorn district , in the southern Lüneburg Heath . The integrated community is centrally located between the Südheide Nature Park , the Drömling Nature Park and the southern edge of the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Park . To the north, the municipality borders on the district of Uelzen . Today's integrated municipality extends over an area of 29,026 ha, of which 6.6% is settlement and traffic area. Larger cities in the vicinity are Celle , Gifhorn , Salzwedel , Uelzen and Wittingen .

According to the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics , in 2005 9,766 people lived in the joint community of Hankensbüttel in 3110 buildings with a total of 4176 apartments with an average living space of 50.5 m per person. Since the establishment of the joint municipality, the number of inhabitants has grown steadily, both through positive natural population development and positive net migration. 19.80% of the population in 2005 were under 18 years old, 6.80% between 18 and 25, 25.40% between 25 and 45, 25.20% between 45 and 64, and 22.70% were 65 years old or older older. The unemployment rate averaged 12.0% (men: 11.3%, women: 13.0%). 2,223 people regularly commute out of the integrated community, 1192 in.
history
The area of today's joint municipality of Hankensbüttel was owned by the Brunons and the dukes of Saxony, the Billungers , until 1051 . In the 12th century the Guelphs acquired the area through inheritance. With the division of the Welfs, the area fell to the Lüneburg line of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . From 1705 the state belonged to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , from 1814 to the Kingdom of Hanover and after the annexation by Prussia in 1866 to the Prussian Province of Hanover . As a result of the Prussian land reform in 1885, the Isenhagen district was created from the communities of Brome, Hankensbüttel, Wesendorf and Wittingen , which merged with the Gifhorn district in 1933.
