Santa Rosa , also known as Santa Rosa del Norte and Santa Rosa de Lima , is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Bolivar in northern Colombia . Santa Rosa is part of the unofficial Cartagena Metropolitan Area , the metropolitan area of Cartagena .

geography

Santa Rosa is located in the north of Bolívar in the sub-region Dique Bolivarense about 14 km from Cartagena and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders Clemencia in the north , Turbaco in the south , Villanueva in the east and Cartagena in the west.

population

The municipality of Santa Rosa has 24,694 inhabitants, of which 15,800 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 1,382,015 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).

history

The indigenous population of today's Santa Rosa has been exploited by the Spanish in the encomienda system since 1549 . As a founding date of this town the year 1735 is indicated as the cacique Alipaya with the permission of the then governor of Cartagena residents from the encomienda system led. As a result, Santa Rosa became one of the most important agricultural producers on the Colombian Caribbean coast .

economy

The main industry in Santa Rosa is agriculture . In particular, cassava , bananas , eggplant , mango , yams , corn and beans are grown. In addition, cattle production plays an important role.
