Schadrinsk ( Russian Шадринск ) is a city in Kurgan Oblast ( Russia ) with 77,756 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located east of the Urals , in the southwest of the West Siberian lowlands , about 130 km northwest of the Oblast capital Kurgan , on the left bank of the Isset River . The climate is continental.

The city of Schadrinsk is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

Shadrinsk is located on the Yekaterinburg (then Sverdlovsk) - Kurgan railway line, which opened continuously in 1933 .

history

A settlement on the site of today's city called Schadrinskaja saimka (Шадринская заимка; schadr is derived from a nickname or patronymic , saimka refers to an economically used place) has been known since 1644.

In 1662 the Schadrinsk Ostrog was built and later converted into a trading settlement (Sloboda). After the construction of the Archangel Michael Church (храма Архангела Михаила / chram Archangela Michaila) in 1712, the place was called the Archangel Town of Shadrinsk (Архангельский Шадрангела Михаила.

In 1781 town charter was granted under the current name and the place became the administrative center of a district ( Ujesd ) in Perm Governorate . In the 19th century, Schadrinsk was an important cultural, handicraft and trading center - especially for agricultural products - in the Ural hinterland. In the nearby village of Krestovskoye (Крестовское, 25 km east), the Krestovo-Ivanovsk fair, the second most important in the Ural region after that of Irbit , took place from 1825 .

Towards the end of the 19th century the importance of the city threatened to decline, as the city was largely bypassed by both branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway (the southern via Chelyabinsk - Kurgan and the northern via Yekaterinburg - Tyumen ). In October 1913, however, a branch line from Bogdanowitsch via Kamensk-Uralsky (Sinarskaya station, what was then Kamensk or Kamensky Sawod) reached the place. This line was later expanded to become the direct Trans-Siberian cross-connection Yekaterinburg - Kurgan, which opened in 1933.
