history
Maria Buch was first mentioned as Pouche in 924.
The area of Maria Buch originally belonged to the Duchy of Carinthia , like all of Southwest Styria , it was transferred to the Eppensteiner Markwart in 930 . Soon afterwards it became part of Salzburg - the area was handed over by the noble Hartwig to his relative Archbishop Adalbert von Salzburg in an exchange. Quasi extraterritorial areas of the then very powerful Salzburg were not uncommon in Styria - the constitutional status of the Styrian areas of Salzburg was only clarified in the recession of Vienna in 1535 . The city of Friesach , which was mighty in the Middle Ages , also belonged to Salzburg until the 19th century. Even today, the historical ties of Maria Buch zu Salzburg can still be seen in the village - the facade of the house of the Röhrich metal works, which was built next to the pilgrimage church, bears two turned upside down keys - still today (but not upside down) the symbol of the St. Peter monastery in Salzburg, whose abbot was at the same time (arch) bishop of Salzburg until 987 .
The Maria Buch-Feistritz community existed for 50 years. It was established on January 1, 1965 by amalgamating the former communities of Maria Buch (with Wöllmerdorf), Feistritz bei Weißkirchen (with Möbersdorf, Pichling, Thann, Großfeistritz, Hopfgarten) and Fisching (with Baierdorf) as well as parts of the then dissolved community of Allersdorf (with Baumkirchen , Unzdorf).
coat of arms
The description of the coat of arms of the former municipality of Maria Buch-Feistritz reads:
- "Between blue battlements in silver above a blue book with silver fittings, a blue lily ."
The battlements symbolize the fortifications of the old Liechtenstein Castle , seat of the treasurers of the Duchy of Styria and Oberthann Castle. The book can already be found on a seal from 1415 of a Konrad von Buch (although the first mention of the church Maria Buch already in 924 leaves open whether this word originally meant the beech tree widespread in the area and not the written material). The lily stands for St. Mary , whose nickname is "Our Lady of Books".
The colors blue and white are those of the Baiern , which made the valley further arable, which can also be found by name near Baierdorf.
The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from June 1, 1989.
