The Simpl is a cabaret that opened in 1911 as the Simplicissimus beer cabaret in Vienna - Innere Stadt . The name, lettering and the red bulldog refer to the Munich satirical magazine Simplicissimus, founded in 1896 .

history

Opened on October 25, 1911 as the Simplicissimus beer cabaret (other sources and the website indicate the year 1912 was founded), the Viennese soon referred to it as “Der Simpl”. A colorful program of chansons , piano improvisations and artistic performances etc. made the theater one of the most popular cellar theaters in Vienna. It was not until the 1920s and 1930s that it became a cabaret revue theater under Karl Farkas and Fritz Grünbaum, which they played until two days before the Anschluss on March 12, 1938. With that month the edition of the company's own monthly magazine Der Wiener Simpl, edited by Viktor Claudius , ended since 1936 .

Then the cabaret belonging to the Goldfarb family was Aryanized . The new director was the National Socialist Felix Bernard, who also worked for the defense. Appearances were from now on reserved for Reich German actors . The new conférenciers were the duo Zwickl and Wondra. Appearances took place u. a. by Mitzi Tesar , Fritz Muliar and Paul Löwinger .

Towards the end of the Second World War , especially after the theater was closed in autumn 1944, the Simpl was used as an air raid shelter.

After the war, the Simpl resumed on May 18, 1945, as the first cabaret in Vienna, but it was not successful until 1950 when Karl Farkas was brought back to the stage from abroad by the current owner Baruch Picker . Other well-known actors were Ernst Waldbrunn , Cissy Kraner , Heinz Conrads , Otto Schenk , Alfred and Maxi Böhm . Karl Farkas' performances were also fixed points on ORF . From 1957 onwards, the station broadcast the balance sheet of the year every year at the end of December . The collaboration between Simpl and Austrian television began as early as October 30, 1957 with the balance of the month , which was mostly broadcast with longer summer breaks until February 1962 and was replaced by the balance of the season . Hugo Wiener also worked as an author and pianist in Simpl from 1950 , which he left with his wife Cissy Kraner in 1965 after breaking up with Farkas. Karl Farkas was the artistic director of Simpl until his death in 1971.

Between 1971 and 1974 the Simpl was artistically directed by Hugo Wiener and Maxi Böhm, after which Martin Flossmann bought it from Picker. His ensemble included Erwin Steinhauer , Kurt Sobotka , Tamara Stadnikow (Flossmann's wife), Hans Harapat, Louis Strasser and Edith Leyrer , and for a time Harald Hofbauer .

In 1993 Albert Schmidleitner, who had been managing director of Simpl since 1981, succeeded Flossmann as the new owner. The then 25-year-old Michael Niavarani took over the artistic direction . His ensemble included Sigrid Hauser , Viktor Gernot , Dolores Schmidinger , Steffi Paschke , Theresia Haiger , Bettina Soriat , Michael Mohapp , Rupert Henning , Andreas Steppan , Markus Mitterhuber , Roman Frankl, Bernhard Murg , Christoph Fälbl , Herbert Steinböck and Gerold Rudle .

A characteristic and unmistakable element is the red curtain, which the Austrian television audience has been familiar with since the 1960s. First Fritz Grünbaum, later Karl Farkas, then Martin Flossmann and from 1993 Michael Niavarani appeared before him, in order to announce the actual program with mostly daily punchlines after an opening number. From autumn 2004 Herbert Steinböck led the program as the master of the ceremony, from 2007 to 2013 this task was carried out by Ciro de Luca . From autumn 2013 to June 2015 Stefano Bernardin acted as conférencier. By Claudia Rhone field led by Tilde Lechner third female emcee and Dolores Schmidinger from fall 2015 to June 2017 in the history of the house through the program. Since the 2017/18 season, Joachim Brandl has acted as conférencier.

Michael Niavarani acquired Simpl in 2019 and will return as artistic director for the 2019/20 season.
