Slavko Avsenik (born November 26, 1929 in Begunje , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † July 2, 2015 in Begunje, Slovenia ) was a Slovenian composer and accordionist .

Life

Slavko Avsenik was initially a ski jumper and as such a member of the then national team of Yugoslavia. He taught himself to play the piano accordion and the Styrian harmonica during his military service. In 1953 he started in the Avsenik Trio with a guitarist (Mitja Butara) and bassist (Borut Finzgar).

Slavko Avsenik founded the music group Gorenjski Kvintet together with his brother Vilko Ovsenik , which became known internationally as Slavko Avsenik and his Original Oberkrainer ("Original Oberkrainer Quintett") and sold more than 36 million records . They are also the inventors of the " Oberkrainer Sound", which is still played by a large number of music groups today.

As a rule, an Oberkrainer line-up consists of an accordion , baritone horn or double bass (bass), guitar (rhythm), clarinet , trumpet and, of course, monophonic or polyphonic singing . Harmonica or a second or even third clarinet were also used for some recordings . There are also albums with string orchestras and brass music .

Although the Oberkrainer style has similarities with Ländlermusik , it was not initially assigned to it. Nor does it correspond to Slovenian folk music. Mainly 4/8 polkas , waltzes and marches are played and, of course, Länders with a typical 4-bar introduction, such as B. the farmer-landlord . However, this style also brought an innovation with the fact that the harmony of many songs was very modern and goes into jazz harmony .

Jazz elements such as sixth chords or secondary dominants (mostly from the second level) can be found in almost every song . This innovation, especially in the accompaniment, can be attributed to the guitarist of the ensemble Leo Ponikvar, who was active as a jazz musician before joining Avsenik and therefore had the necessary knowledge.

Slavko Avsenik's greatest successful title is the Trumpet Echo (1954), which was recorded in the popular recording (published in 1955) by a quartet (without guitar) and which has become an evergreen of popular music, as well as in numerous versions since then (wind band , a cappella etc.) was recorded. This composition only became known to a wide audience with the help of Fred Rauch , who happened to hear the title on Radio Klagenfurt. In the 1970s, it was the signature tune of the ZDF broadcast Funny Musicians and the monthly radio broadcast Wettstreit nach Noten der Deutschlandfunk . The trumpet echo also became the theme song for the ORF broadcast Musikantenstadl . Other successful titles are Auf der Autobahn , Slovenian Farmer's Dance and It's so nice to be a musician , as well as Planica, Planica , a song that is played every year at the ski flying competitions on the Letalnica hill .

Slavko Avsenik (2008)

1992 handed Avsenik his songs especially in the ensemble Gašperji (in October 2009 in Kranjci renamed), which he "The Kranjci" officially became the successor ensemble appointed its original Oberkrainer under the name. Most of the long-term members have now died: the trumpeter Franc Košir (1930–1991), the guitarist Leo Ponikvar (1917–1992), the clarinetist Albin Rudan (1933–2009) and the baritone and bassist Mik Soss (1929–2004) do not live anymore.

Avsenik's son Slavko Avsenik junior is responsible for the arrangements of many pieces for the band Laibach . His grandson Sašo Avsenik founded their own group in Begunje in 2009 together with six other musicians in the style of the Original Oberkrainer and is also celebrating successes; Among other things, he also appeared in the Musikantenstadl .

On July 2, 2015, Slavko Avsenik died at the age of 85 after a brief and serious illness.

Slavko Avsenik
Slavko Avsenik was the boss and founder of the Original Oberkrainer and, together with his brother Vilko Ovsenik , composer of almost all melodies played with his ensemble (exception: folk tunes). Avsenik played a Morino VM accordion made by Hohner for decades . In his honor, Hohner is producing a special series of the Morino V + (Slavko Avsenik Retro), which has a slightly changed design and a special sound.
Franc Košir
Franc Košir was the group's trumpeter. As a comedian in the ensemble, he was famous for titles like Franz der Maurerg'sell , That would be nice , Auf der Idiotenwiese or Die Hungerkur . From the mid-1980s Košir was replaced as trumpeter by Jože Balažic and was only responsible for humorous vocal interludes and jokes.
Nikolay ("Mik") Soss
