Sonja
Sonja is a female given name .
Origin and meaning
Sonja is the Russian pet form of the female given name Sophia , which means "wisdom" or "the wise". Derived from the Russian "son", the name also has the meaning: "the dreaming", "the dreamer". The name is given a special coloring by the fact that this pet form in Russian also means “ sleep mouse ” or “sleepy head”. Occasionally Sonja is also translated as “the one who fights for the truth”, although the literal translation is the first mentioned.
From 1900 the name enjoyed great popularity in Scandinavia and since the 1950s it has become a fashion name in many European countries. In Germany, the name was chosen more often, especially in the 1970s. In 1975 he took 15th place in the list of female first names awarded that year.
