history

Sittersdorf municipal office
Miklauzhof

The church of St. Helena in Sittersdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1154. In the Middle Ages, the ducal district court for the Jauntal was housed in the castle Sonnegg, which was built in the 13th century by Heunburger Ministeriale (first mentioned in documents in 1267). The coat of arms of the Lords of Sonnegg, the eagle wing, can still be found in the municipal coat of arms. They owned the castle until the 16th century, after which the Ungnad family owned and expanded the building, which finally came into the possession of Orsini-Rosenberg in 1639 .

Almost nothing can be found about the second castle, located south of St. Philippen in the municipality of Sittersdorf on the Gradiše hill. However, there is a report by Stephan Singer from 1938, from which it emerges that there are remains of a castle wall on the castle hill. The assumption is that this was the castle "Juno" or "Kristendorf".

From the early modern era, Sittersdorf was known for its viticulture, and Sittersdorf wine is even said to be sold to the court of the Spanish King Karl III. have come. On the advice of the Austrian ambassador in Spain, Prince Franz von Rosenberg, to try the red Sittersdorf "healthy wine" for stomach and digestive problems, which only gets its character when it is ready for autumn, the king delivered two "Lagl" of them via Trieste to Madrid to let. The cultivation of the Sittersdorfer "Rötel" is carried out to the present day, albeit to a small extent.

The local community of Sittersdorf, founded in 1850, was incorporated into the Eberndorf community in 1865 , but became independent again six years later. In 1944, the municipal area was expanded to include the cadastral communities Rückersdorf (dissolved as a local community) and Proboi, and in 1973 parts of the market community Eisenkappel-Vellach were enlarged.

The old elementary school was demolished and replaced by a new one, social housing and a bilingual kindergarten were also created.

population

According to the 2001 census, the community of Sittersdorf has 2,127 inhabitants, 98.1% of whom are Austrian citizens. 19.8% belong to the Slovene-speaking ethnic group .

93.2% of the community population profess to the Roman Catholic Church , 1.1% to the Protestant Church , 3.7% without religious belief.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Sittersdorf has the following blazon : "Split shield, a silver bunch of grapes in front in red, a black eagle's wing floating in gold behind." The reason for the inclusion of the grape in the coat of arms was the fact that at the time the coat of arms was awarded (1961) Sittersdorf was the only municipality in Carinthia in which viticulture was still practiced to a significant extent (Sittersdorfer "Rötel"). The eagle wing is taken from the seal of the Lords of Sonnegg, as it was attached to a document from 1344; this family, named after the castle, can be traced as their owners from 1296 to the 16th century.

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on April 28, 1961. The municipal flag is red and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
