St. Johannes Baptist (rooms)
St. Johannes Baptist (also Johanneskapelle ) is a chapel on the north-western edge of the village of Schwäbisch Gmünd-Zimmer on the so-called Böckelsberg.
history
The construction time of the chapel is unoccupied. Although the construction indicates an old age, a documentary mention is only proven for November 29, 1372. At that time it was agreed between Gotteszell and Zimmer that the pastor of Iggingen , according to old tradition, has to hold a Holy Mass every week in Zimmer. The first secure dating of the building can be found in 1411 for the roof and the bell tower . In 1727 extensive changes were made to the interior. During the restoration in 1934, Alois Schenk from Schwäbisch Gmünd took on the painting work. Further repairs were carried out in 1954, 1974 and 1995.
Furnishing
The outside of the chapel has a Gothic appearance, the inside has whitewashed walls and a limestone floor from 1974. The coffered ceiling dates from 1727, as does the gallery and the high altar . This baroque -looking altar also has Gothic figures from around 1490. The Johannessschüssel shows a head on a wooden plate. The head comes from a Romanesque crucifix from the 12th century. Further figures represent a Johannes Baptist from 1470/1480, a Saint Leonhard from the 16th century and a Pietà from the 17th century with a silver crown from the 18th century. In 1936 wall paintings from the 15th century were exposed again.
