The FC St. Johnstone (officially: St. Johnstone Football Club ) is a professional football club from Perth , Scotland . It was named after the medieval name for Perth - “St. John's Toun ”, named after the church there dedicated to John the Baptist . Since 2009 the club has been playing in the Scottish Premiership again .

history

The club was founded in 1884 by players from a cricket club who were looking for post-season employment. Club members rented some land near the South Inch, also known as the Recreation Ground, and became the first home of St. Johnstone FC. When the site got too small, they moved to the other side of Perth and built Muirton Park, which would be home for the next 65 years. It took a long time before one could show some real successes in the club's history. In 1969 they reached the final of the Scottish League Cup, but lost to Celtic from Glasgow 1-0. In the 1970/71 season they finished third, behind Celtic and Aberdeen, but before the Rangers. This 3rd place qualified for participation in the UEFA Cup 1971/72, where you could even kick Hamburger SV out of the competition, but did not get beyond the third round. 1996/97 you could again move up to the 1st division and stay there until 2002. The 1998/99 season can be described as one of the most successful for the club. The league was finished third, reached the final of the League Cup and the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. Due to the league placement, they took part again in the 1999/00 UEFA Cup, but failed in the first round at AS Monaco . After relegation in 2002 they played in the 2nd division of Scotland.

In 2009 he was promoted back to the Scottish Premier League . Even before the last day of the match, the championship title of the First Division was secured when St. Johnstone won 3-1 against Greenock Morton , while second-placed Partick Thistle FC lost 1-0 to Airdrie United . After promotion, the club reached a single-digit position twice in a row and was most recently able to qualify for the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League . After more than 100 years, the club moved into the final of the Scottish FA Cup for the first time in 2014 , where they met Dundee United on May 17, 2014 . The final, which was held in Celtic Park in Glasgow , was won 2-0, making it the greatest success in the club's history.
