Stéphane Da Costa (born July 11, 1989 in Paris ) is a French - Polish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL since May 2020 .
Career
Stéphane Da Costa began his career as an ice hockey player in his French homeland, where he was active for a year between 2004 and 2006 for the youth teams of Viry-Châtillon Essonne Hockey and HC Amiens Somme . The center then went to North America, where he stood on the ice for the junior teams Texas Tornado from the North American Hockey League and Sioux City Musketeers from the United States Hockey League for the next three years . From 2009 to 2011, the Frenchman attended Merrimack College , for whose ice hockey team he participated in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations. In the 2009/10 season he was able to convince with 45 scorer points, including 16 goals, in 34 games and was named Rookie of the Year for Hockey East , as well as being appointed to their second All-Star Team and the All-Rookie Team. In addition, he was named Rookie of the Year of the NCAA from New England named.
After Da Costa was able to convince in his second year at Merrimack College and was again elected to the second All-Star Team of Hockey East, he received a two-year contract with the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League on March 31, 2011 . He made his NHL debut on April 2, 2011 in the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs . By the end of the season he was still in three more games for Ottawa in the NHL on the ice, in which he also remained pointless and punished. In the following three years he played mainly for the Senators farm team in the American Hockey League , but also completed a total of 47 NHL games. In the summer of 2014, his contract with the Senators expired and Da Costa was signed by HK CSKA Moscow from the Continental Hockey League . In 2016 he was nominated for the KHL All-Star Game.
Due to the outstanding performance - six goals and four assists - at the 2017 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship , he was one of the candidates for a move from Europe to the NHL after the tournament. Due to health problems, there was no change to the NHL, and a change of club within the KHL to HK Awangard Omsk failed. Ultimately, Da Costa received a contract until the end of the season with Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League in October 2017 .
He returned to the KHL in the summer of 2018 when he signed a contract with Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg . For Awto he scored 51 points in 66 games this season and was nominated for the KHL All-Star Game 2919 for his performance. In May 2019 he switched to Lokomotive Yaroslavl within the KHL . After a year in Yaroslavl, in which he scored 17 goals and 23 assists, he moved within the KHL to Ak Bars Kazan .
International
For France, Da Costa took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2006 and the U20 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2008 and 2009 . When he participated in the Junior World Championships, he was not only one of the best players in his team, but also one of the players with the highest points in the tournaments.
In the senior division, he was in his country's squad at the top division World Championships in 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2014 , 2015 and 2017 . He scored nine goals in 35 games and provided 15 templates. He was named one of the top three players in France at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He also represented his colors in the Olympic qualification for the Winter Games in Pyeongchang 2018 .
