history
middle Ages
A place called Steder or Stedere already existed in the Middle Ages west of today's Steterburg . This place was mentioned several times between 1007 and 1543; later he fell wildly. Steder already existed before the first documented mention. The castle Stederburg which was built from 924 to 933, is therefore younger than the location. Its usefulness became evident as early as 938 when Hungarian soldiers were defeated from there. It was a spur castle on the edge of the Oker lowlands , which Heinrich I , King of Eastern Franconia from 919 to 936, had built.
Later, around the turn of the millennium, Count Altmann von Oelsburg owned the Stederburg Castle and the associated village. In his will he decreed that a nunnery should be founded from his estate. Around the year 1000/02 the Steterburg Abbey was founded by his wife and daughter.
Even if the monastery and later women's monastery no longer exists as an institution, the new buildings erected after a decline in the 16th century are still there.
For the further history of the monastery see: Steterburg Abbey
Early modern age
After the heyday of the monastery and village of Steterburg, there was a decline from 1546 to 1547 during the Schmalkaldic War , which completely destroyed the place.
Construction of today's residential area in 1938/1939
Until 1938, the residents of Steterburg lived in the so-called Alt Steterburg , where they worked on a domain belonging to the monastery .
In the course of the establishment of the Hermann-Göring-Werke (today's Salzgitter AG ), the construction of a workers' settlement in the National Socialist style began in the area of the women's monastery, which was finally dissolved in 1938. In less than a year by the beginning of 1939, around 1,070 apartments were built for several families each, so that in the end nearly 7,000 people lived in Steterburg.
The place was incorporated into Thiede on April 1, 1939, which in turn became a district of Watenstedt-Salzgitter on April 1, 1942.
