Stuttgart-Süd is one of the five inner city districts of the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart, south of the city center between Stuttgart-Mitte and Degerloch .
Districts
The city district was created in 1956 in its current expansion from the Stuttgart-Süd district of the same name, including the Heslach residential district , which was no longer delimited at the time, and the Kaltental district .
When the districts were reorganized in 2001, the district of Stuttgart-Süd was divided into the six districts of Bopser, Lehen , Weinsteige , Karlshöhe , Heslach and Südheim, so that the district, including the Kaltental district, has consisted of seven districts since then.
history
The Alte Weinsteige was first mentioned in 1350 , an extremely steep cart path that all freight wagon traffic had to take from Stuttgart to the south in the direction of Tübingen . Up to 16 horses were needed to lead the climb.
In order to cope with the increased traffic, the Neue Weinsteige , a wide panoramic road , was built between 1826 and 1831 by senior building officer Gottlieb Christian Eberhard von Etzel . The rack railway has been running along the Alte Weinsteige since 1884 .
Heslach
According to a legend, Duke Ulrich von Württemberg , who was fleeing from Stuttgart, was betrayed by the Heslach family in 1518. When he returned, the Heslachers had to wear blue stockings to go to church on Sundays as a punishment - hence their local nickname, Blaustrümpfler . The name "Heslach" developed, via "Haselach", from the name of the Haselbach , which is now ruined .
Until the middle of the 19th century, the Heslacher lived mainly from viticulture (→ Viticulture in Stuttgart ). At the turn of the century, the southern slope of the Hasenberg consisted of three large vineyards, which today only survive in street names: Afternhalde , Wanne and Gebelsberg . Since the early days of the company , the basin has quickly been filled with tenement houses. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the crown of King Karl I of Württemberg , Heslach was temporarily called Karlsvorstadt from 1889.
Since 1879, Heslach has also been connected to the Gäubahn at route kilometers 9.4 through the Stuttgart-Heslach stop . The small breakpoint was on the edge of the Stuttgart district of Heslach, far above the actual settlement. The halt went into operation with the opening of the Gäubahn on September 1, 1879 and was closed again on May 29, 1960; It experienced a brief heyday in the decades before and after the war due to the workers commuting from Böblingen and the surrounding area to Heslach who had found work at the well-known Zeiss-Ikon Contessa factory in the Dornhalde; At that time there was a horse-drawn carriage connection for the workers and employees of the Contessa factory in Dornhaldenstraße up to the Heslach stop, set up by the Zeiss-Ikon company. Zeiss-Ikon significantly expanded the Contessa factory in Dornhaldenstraße after the war and resumed fallow camera production from 1948 onwards at the only Zeiss-Ikon camera production site in Heslach that was undamaged after the war. The nearby simple housing estate "Eiernest" was built from 1926 on by the city of Stuttgart as part of the emergency work for city workers and employees.
Another noteworthy structure is the Heslacher Schwab Tunnel . The 125 meter long tunnel was built in the years 1894 to 1896 under the city planning officer Carl Kölle and connects the Stuttgart districts south and west. The 10.50 meter wide and 8.50 meter high road tunnel crosses both Wannenstrasse and Hasenbergsteige (at the time the main traffic axis in the direction of Birkenkopf), at its highest point the Hasenberg Tower as the highest point in the south of Stuttgart until it was blown up in 1943 and establishes the connection between Schwabstrasse in the west of Stuttgart and Schickhardtstrasse in the south.
The Schwab Tunnel is particularly noteworthy because when it opened on June 29, 1896, it was the widest and one of the first inner-city tunnels in Europe. It is also the first tunnel in the world that was driven by automobiles. Two lanes lead through the tunnel (one in each direction) and to the right and left of the two lanes each a stepped pedestrian path separated from the road by a barrier made of precast concrete. On both sides of the tunnel portals, which are decorated in baroque sandstone, there are staircases to the higher parts of Heslach such as the Karlshöhe and the Hasenbergsteige, which serve as access to the high-lying Birkenkopf, which after the Hasenberg Tower was blown up and the Birkenkopf was filled up from war Building rubble ("Scherbelino") now represents the highest point of the Hasenberg to the south above the Gäubahn near Heslach.
Südheim
The Südheimer Platz was built with the Südheim settlement (1901–1903) north of the old rifle house (1895), both built by the Stuttgart architect Karl Hengerer . Since 1929, the Stuttgart funicular has been connecting Heslach with the higher forest cemetery from Südheimer Platz. The eastern edge development was built around 1928, including the brick-blade settlement in Bauhaus style , which is now a listed building . Today the Südheim-Siedlung is a listed building as a whole, as is the old Schützenhaus. Until the 1970s, there was also a small SSB tram depot, the "Südheim depot", which was moved to the adjacent SSB stop in Vogelrain and in its place today is the Hohentwiel senior citizens' residence at the lower end the Hohentwielstrasse is located. It should also be mentioned that the striking Bauknecht high-rise, located next to the Vogelrain SSB stop - on the B 14 - is Stuttgart's first high-rise, and the last one remained in the "fresh air corridor to Kaltental".
Kaltental
Kaltental Castle , after which the Kaltental district was named, was first mentioned in a document in 1125. After the castle was partially destroyed, the lords and later the burgraves moved from Kaltental to Aldingen am Neckar . The rebuilt castle then changed hands again and again until it was demolished from 1796 after increasing deterioration. Originally three settlements developed around the castle, which were later merged to form Kaltental: "Unterweiler" in the Nesenbachaue, "Oberweiler", where the primary school and the Protestant church are today, and "Schloßberg" between Burgstrasse, Schloßbergstrasse and Burggrafenweg with the former Kaltental Castle, where the Catholic Church of St. Antonius has stood since 1932. In 1809 the connecting road from Stuttgart to Vaihingen , which cuts through the Kaltental, was built along the Nesenbach . In 1922 Kaltental was incorporated.
The memorandum of Count Eberhard the Bearded "The of Kaltental does not believe that" was the cold Taler trademark. Kaltental became known nationwide through the song Oh Anna Scheufele from Kaltental ("Mir schmeckt koi Veschber meh ', Since i dees girl gseh'"). In the song, the humorist Werner Veidt sings about the fictional character of Anna Scheufele, "e pfondigs Bolleweib, with 'sex appeal' in her body". |
