action

Barry is frustrated and tired of his life as an earthworm . He and his crawling conspecifics are at the bottom of the insect hierarchy and are ridiculed by beetles and insects as dirt-eating worms. His job as a clerk in the composting industry doesn't fill him up either, and only at the urging of his mother does he seek a position in middle management. The exams will take place in three weeks.

After his father gave him his documents from 30 years in the composting industry, he found the record Greatest Disco Hits '77 in a box . When he listens to them, he is thrilled and his dreary everyday life is forgotten. Now he knows what he wants to do: found a band and make music. In addition, the TV competition “Grand Prix of Melodies” is currently taking place, in which the winner will receive $ 10,000. His friend Tito is supposed to play the bass guitar . Barry hands out posters inviting people to audition, but the only candidate who appears is Gloria. She can't sing very well, but Barry has been secretly in love with Gloria for a long time. In the Hard Root Cafe they meet heavy metal fan Jimmy, who is to become their lead guitarist . When they have their first band rehearsal in their company's warehouse, they are caught by Barry's supervisor, Donna. She grew up in the backyard of a disco and immediately takes over Barry's drums , who are supposed to play the keyboard instead .

When the aging Schlager bug Tony Dean found out that the band wanted to take part in the competition, he approached Gloria. Barry receives a letter telling him that your band cannot be included in the competition because they do not want worms. He does not want to accept the cancellation and convince the organizers with a demo video. After Gloria reveals to Tony Dean where they are holding their band rehearsals, Barry's boss finds out and throws them out.

As they escape, they are caught by a human with a shovel and placed in a live bait machine. After they manage to escape again, Tito leaves the band to take his middle management exam. There he achieved the best result with 100 points. To his disappointment, however, he is only supposed to dig a wine cellar for his superior in middle management. Then he decides to come back to the band, which is at the already started competition, but should be kicked out there. Gloria now uses her proximity to Tony Dean to secretly take away his CD, which is supposed to play the playback for his show. During his performance, the audience learns that Tony Dean cannot sing due to the missing playback CD. After Tony was chased off the stage, the host brings Barry and his band back and asks them to perform instead. In the meantime Tito has also arrived and the band achieved a great success with the audience with their performance. Tony bribed the jury and so, to the surprise of the audience, the mayflies win the $ 10,000 prize. After an initial disappointment, Gloria explains that it doesn't matter if they get rich and famous, after all, they made the audience dance. A cheering crowd and his parents, who are very proud of him, are already waiting for Barry in the Wurm Settlement. Barry and Gloria eventually become a couple.

Reviews

“The idea of casting the hit villain with the voice of Roberto Blanco shows at least originality and self-irony. Otherwise, Dirk Bach (Tito) and Hella von Sinnen (Donna) are in their element, but the spark still doesn't jump. The euro cartoon fails because of its moderate, unsympathetic animation. This may well be due to the short production time and the low budget. But why are you competing in a field where Pixar and DreamWorks are worth hundreds of millions? "

- Jörg Gerle - film service

“The classic outsider story is told about the poor worm who becomes a star because he steadfastly believes in his idea, defies all odds and receives support from his friends at the right moment. Although the animated film, made in a Danish-German co-production, had to make do with a fraction of the budget of other international productions and was made in a relatively short time, it impresses with its lovingly designed and appealingly animated characters. "

“This film, which is too predictable for older cinema-goers, doesn't think outside the box, at least not when it comes to the adult target group. The little ones will certainly have their fun and realize that everyone has what it takes to become something very special, and at least from this point of view the groovy fun is pedagogically justifiable. "

- Kerstin Germund - editing - the film magazine

“To be as enthusiastic as its subject, the film is too carefully animated and, above all, staged. To say that disco dancing earthworms isn't a shame is of course forbidden. The dear beasts deserved as little as the sound of the seventies, the creation of which Nielsen quite truthfully traces: the boredom of a well-ordered performance society and the revolt against discrimination of all kinds made the disco ball spin. "

- Philipp Bühler - Berliner Zeitung

“The timelessly touching story about an outsider struggling for recognition moves all age groups. Nevertheless, "Sunshine Barry and the Disco Worms" will "catch on" smaller viewers up to the age of twelve better than older viewers, who will probably choose a different film for their first date. "

- Bastian Fersch - parents

“The touching story about an outsider who longs for recognition and respect and is ready to fight for it is accompanied by a great soundtrack. [..] While also the elderly over allusions like " mud hole 54 " or Kafkaesque seemingly composting office units and a raspberry, earthworm-head to on Barry's afro , fun is -Perücke, laugh and marvel younger than distorer or the adventurous Escape from an angler.
