Sven Kums (born February 26, 1988 in Asse ) is a Belgian football player who is under contract with the KAA Gent in the Belgian division 1A .

Career

Club career

Sven Kums started his career in the youth of Dilbeek Sport before moving to RSC Anderlecht in 1996 . There he played for a total of ten years in the youth team and later in the club's second team until he was appointed to the first team in 2006. After not playing a single game in the first half of the 2006/2007 season , in which Anderlecht finally won the championship, he went on loan to Lierse SK in January 2007 .

Sven Kums made his professional football debut on February 10, 2007 against FC Brussels . During his loan, he played a total of 14 times for Lierse and scored one goal. After Lierse was relegated at the end of the season, Kums returned to Anderlecht, but was no longer appointed to the first team's squad, so he continued to play for the second team. In January 2008, therefore, Kums moved on loan to KV Kortrijk in the second Belgian division . This season, Kums made a total of 16 appearances and five goals. In addition, he reached first place with Kortrijk at the end of the season, which the team rose to the first division for the next season. As a result, Kums signed a permanent contract with Kortrijk in June 2008. After three years at Kortrijk, in which Kums played a total of 108 appearances for the team and scored ten goals, SC Heerenveen announced in March 2011 that Kums had changed to SC for 800,000 euros for the 2011/12 season . Kums then had his first game in the Eredivisie on August 6, 2011 against the NEC Nijmegen .

After two years with SC Heerenveen, Kums finally returned to Belgium and signed a three-year contract with SV Zulte Waregem for two million euros . Here, however, he only stayed one year, in which he played 41 games and scored five goals, until KAA Gent signed him for 1.5 million euros on July 1, 2014 , where he signed a four-year contract until 2018. After a good 2014/15 season , he became Belgian champion with Gent.

Kums won the 2015 Golden Shoe as “the most outstanding player in the Belgian league” .

After Kums moved to English first division club Watford for ten million euros after the 2015/16 season, he signed a one-year loan deal with Udinese Calcio in Serie A on August 29, 2016 .

In the summer of 2017, Kums moved back to Belgium, where he signed with RSC Anderlecht . From December 2018 he was the team's captain for the remainder of the 2018/19 season.

In the 2019/20 season he was not part of the RSC Anderlecht squad in the first four games . He was then loaned to KAA Gent for the remainder of the season . In mid-January 2020 it was agreed that Kums would finally move to Ghent after the loan expired for the new 2020/21 season. He signed a contract there until summer 2023.

National team

Sven Kums made his debut in the Belgian U-21 national team on September 5, 2008 against Slovakia .

So far, Kums has not played a game for the Belgian national team . National coach Marc Wilmots announced on October 2, 2015 that Kums, together with his teammates Matz Sels and Laurent Depoitre , would be in the squad for the international matches against Andorra and Israel for the first time . He was not actually used in these internationals or in the friendly against Italy in November 2015. He has not been reappointed to the squad since then.
