Tama is a small town (with the status " City ") in Tama County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . At the 2010 census , Tama had 2,877 inhabitants, the number of which had decreased to 2,842 by 2013.

Tama is located in east central Iowa on the left bank of the Iowa River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . This forms the border with Illinois around 170 km east . The Iowa- Minnesota border runs about 185 km north; Missouri's northern border is 165 km south.
The geographical coordinates of Tama are 41 ° 58'00 "north latitude and 92 ° 34'37" west longitude. The city extends over an area of 8.83 km² and forms the center of the Tama Township .
Meskwaki Settlement , the settlement area of the officially recognized by the US government Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa , part of the Sauk and Fox , begins 2 km west of the city. US Highway 30 , which has been converted into a freeway, runs in a west-east direction on the northern edge of the urban area of Tama and crosses US Highway 63 at the height of the city center . This runs in north-south direction as the main street through the center of the city. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
An Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS) freight railroad runs northwest-southeast through the metropolitan area of Tama.
