Despereaux - Der kleine Mäuseheld is an American computer-animated film that was released in Germany on March 19, 2009 . Its original title is The Tale of Despereaux . Under this it came on December 19, 2008 in the USA in the cinemas. The film is based on the 2003 children's book Despereaux - Of One Who Set Out To Unlearn Fear by Kate DiCamillo .
Despereaux - The Little Mouse Hero was nominated by Universal Pictures as a possible nominee for an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Animated Feature , but did not receive it.

The little kingdom of Dor is steeped in joy. The happiness of its residents is complete and couldn't be greater. They are eagerly awaiting the presentation of the royal chef's latest creation on the soup festival. But a terrible accident leaves the kingdom freeze in deep sorrow. Soon the joy is almost forgotten and only exists in the memory of the residents of Dor. The sky is permanently overcast and hides the sun, the fields lie fallow and the residents of Dor begin to forget their happiness and the longing for better times disappears.
The little mouse Despereaux Tilling was born around this time. He quickly developed into an outsider. Despite his small size, he is convinced that he has a higher calling - like the knights in the stories that Despereaux devours with enthusiasm. So he does not adapt, he neither scurries stealthily, nor does he show fear. He is also constantly filled with courage and curiosity.
After the council finds out that Despereaux has spoken to a person, he is banished to the dungeons by him.
In the rat world, Despereaux is quickly disturbed and in danger of being killed for their amusement. The rat Roscuro rescues him from this emergency. The two become friends and Despereaux teaches Roscuro virtue and together they venture into the big wide world.
When Princess Pea Roscuro turns down friendship, his heart darkens and he and Mig, another outsider, seek revenge. After the kidnapping of Pea, Despereaux discovers that he alone can save the princess.

The film received mixed reviews. On the plus side are its optical qualities and charismatic characters. On the other hand, the not very original story and weaknesses in the implementation of the novel are criticized.
