Theodor M. Fliedner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodor Max Fliedner (born October 1, 1929 in Hamburg ; † November 9, 2015 in Ulm ) was a German hematologist , radiation biologist , university professor and internationally recognized pioneer in stem cell research . In 1967 Fliedner was a founding member of Ulm University and its rector from 1983 to 1991 .

Fliedner also considered one of the fathers of the Science City Science Park on the Upper Eselsberg in Ulm.

Life

After completing his medical studies at the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg and at the University of Göttingen , Theodor M. Fliedner initially worked and researched in southern Germany. The focus of his research was on radiation biology ; in his dissertation in 1955 he had already dealt with the effects of radiation in animal experiments. In the late 1950s was followed by several years of research in the United States , where he on an invitation from Eugene P. Cronkite out in the Medical Research Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Iceland in the US state of New York , the effects of the fallout of nuclear weapons tests examined. During these years, Fliedner was also temporarily active as a "clinical fellow" in hematology at the Department of Medicine at Carl Moore in St. Louis .

Theodor M. Fliedner returned to Germany in 1963 and completed his habilitation with Ludwig Heilmeyer in Freiburg in 1964 . On the basis of an agreement between the University of Freiburg , the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) and the Society for Radiation Research (GSF), a hematological laboratory designed by him had been set up, and he was in charge of it.

When Ludwig Heilmeyer left Freiburg after his retirement in 1967, Theodor Fliedner followed him to Ulm as a young university professor . There he was the youngest of the eight founding professors of the University of Ulm and, as the founding dean, headed the Faculty of Theoretical Medicine at the time . On his initiative, the University of Ulm was expanded to include engineering and computer science in the following years . The expansion of the university led to a gradual structural expansion of the university grounds and ultimately to the creation of the science city "Science Park I and II" on the Upper Eselsberg in Ulm.

Until his retirement, Fliedner headed the Institute for Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine at Ulm University. With great commitment, Fliedner also campaigned for the maintenance and expansion of the Reisensburg Castle Science Center in Günzburg , which he served as director for many years.

Scientific achievements

As a pioneer in stem cell research, Fliedner gained essential knowledge to clarify the fundamental importance of blood-forming stem cells. He was a pioneer in stem cell transplantation and achieved fundamental results in the therapy of oncological- haematological diseases and the treatment of radiation damage . In 1993, the World Health Organization (WHO) made him head of its highest scientific advisory body - the chair of the Cooperative Center for Radiation Accident Management - for five years .

Theodor M. Fliedner has received numerous top-class prizes and honors for his excellent scientific work in the field of experimental and clinical radiation hematology. Among other things, he was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , honorary member of many specialist societies and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

Personal

Theodor Max Fliedner was a great-grandson of Theodor Fliedner , the founder of the Kaiserswerther Diakonie . He was married to a doctor and had five children.

Theodor M. Fliedner died in November 2015 at the age of 86 in Ulm.
