development

In 1998, the armaments divisions of Alcatel , Dassault Électronique and Thomson CSF were merged into a new company, with France holding the majority stake in this company. From 1998 to 2000, the French state reduced its shares. In June 2000 Thomson CSF took over the British company Racal , one of the largest English electronics groups. Finally, at the end of 2000, Thomson CSF was renamed Thales. In 2002 the Thales Group and the French shipbuilding company DCN founded the shipbuilding joint venture Armaris . In 2003, Thales UK and BAE Systems won the tender to build the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier for the British Royal Navy .

With the acquisition of some technology divisions from AEG , Siemens , ABB , Bombardier and other companies, the group has meanwhile become a global corporation.

In 2006/2007, as part of the takeover of the US communications group Lucent by Alcatel , Thales acquired from Alcatel and Alcatel-Lucent the French stake in Alcatel Alenia Space (67%) and Telespazio (33%) as well as the Control and safety technology for rail traffic. Since the takeovers were financed by shares, Alcatel-Lucent's stake in Thales rose from 9.46 to 20.95 percent. In 2009 Dassault Aviation took over this stake from Alcatel-Lucent. Dassault exercised his influence and in May 2009 had the CEO & Chairman of the Thales Group Denis Ranque replaced by his preferred candidate Luc Vigneron , formerly CEO of the French technology company Nexter . In December 2012, Luc Vigneron resigned because he lacked the support of the two main shareholders. He was followed by the French Jean-Bernard Lévy , former CEO of Vivendi .

The takeover of the chip card manufacturer Gemalto by the Thales Group, announced at the end of 2017, was completed on April 2, 2019.
