The 2015/16 Bundesliga was the 50th season for men and the 41st season for women in the top German table tennis division. Champions were Borussia Düsseldorf and ttc berlin eastside .

Men

The men's season began on August 22nd, 2015 with the game between defending champions Borussia Düsseldorf and Post SV Mühlhausen , the main round ended on March 28th, 2016. Ten teams took part. The best four teams after the end of the regular season took part in the play-off rounds to determine the German champions. The ninth and tenth placed teams were supposed to be relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, but did not have to do so because no second division team applied for a license for the following season. The TTC Hagen , which finished the season in 9th place, nevertheless withdrew for financial reasons. The team from ASV Grünwettersbach was new , replacing the eighth place in the previous season, TTC Frickenhausen , who had withdrawn for financial reasons.

TSV Bad Königshofen (champion 2nd team) and TTC Jülich (second 2nd team) decided not to move up to the 1st Bundesliga .

Season course

Top of the table

The only club that was on a play-off spot for the whole season was 1.FC Saarbrücken - at the same time the only club that was only beaten by later play-off participants during the season - . Matchday moved up from third to first place and was the leader of the table for a total of 12 game days. He gave them three times for a total of 4 game days to Ochsenhausen, which had been on a play-off pitch since the second game day. After starting difficulties (2 defeats from the first 3 games), Fulda finally made it into the play-off group on matchday 5 and even took the lead on the last matchday. These three teams formed the closed top group since the 6th matchday, into which no other team could advance. Werder Bremen only held first place on the first matchday, while Düsseldorf found themselves in the 2-3rd place on the first five matchdays.

midfield

Behind the leading group lay a broad midfield that was fighting for fourth play-off place and was mostly led by Düsseldorf. The champions of the previous season had to struggle with numerous injury-related failures and weaknesses, fell several times back to 5th place and was never able to take the lead in the table. Grenzau, second in the previous season, was also affected by failures - at times both top players could not compete at the same time - and only managed to reach the desired play-off spot on matchday 4. In the last third of the season, however, it was not possible to build on the strong performances of the previous season, so that the team finally took seventh place at the end of midfield. Werder Bremen fell back to seventh place after first place on matchday one, but then worked their way up again. Most of the time, the team was in 5th or 6th place, even 4th for a matchday, but ultimately after the 16th matchday there were only theoretical chances of a play-off rank. In addition to Düsseldorf, Bergneustadt had the longest hopes for the play-offs, they repeatedly advanced to fourth place and on the penultimate game day finally delivered a direct duel with the record champions, which was 3-1 for Bergneustadt, which was already known as the "final" ended. However, the team lost the play-off place that was believed to be safe on the last day of the match when Düsseldorf won at the bottom of the table, Grünwettersbach, and Bergneustadt lost 3-2 at home to eighth-placed Mühlhausen in a dramatic four-hour game. In the event of a tie, the better game difference decided for Düsseldorf.

Relegation battle

As expected, three teams played the relegation places among themselves: Mühlhausen, the last of the preseason, promoted Grünwettersbach and the completely new team from TTC Hagen. Grünwettersbach achieved their first victory on the 2nd matchday against Mühlhausen, Hagen defeated Grünwettersbach again on the 3rd matchday, whereby Mühlhausen fell back to last place. The first victory in the game against Hagen was not achieved until matchday 7, after Hagen had celebrated the first victory against a non-relegation candidate on the matchday - against the reigning champions Düsseldorf, who was also defeated by Grünwettersbach during the season. With a win over Grenzau, Hagen was able to pull away further before Mühlhausen started a series with three wins in a row on the 11th match day and thus left the relegation places behind for the first time in the season. On the 16th matchday, the Thuringians secured 8th place with a victory over Hagen, Hagen was ninth and Grünwettersbach, who had not been relegated only on the first two game days, last.

Ultimately, although no team had to relegate, as no second division team had applied for a license for the first Bundesliga, the TTC Hagen withdrew for financial reasons.

Play-offs

Dusseldorf, which was able to conquer the fourth play-off place on the last day of play with help from Mühlhausen, met in the first semi-final against Fulda, which was only able to secure the championship lead on the last day of the game. The same encounter had happened in the last two Bundesliga finals and also in the last four Cup finals, with the victory always going to Düsseldorf, just like in the two games in the regular season. The first leg took place on April 3, the first leg of the second semi-final, in which Ochsenhausen and Saarbrücken met, on April 8, and both second legs on April 24. The final took place on May 22nd in the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt am Main without a return match .

Against Düsseldorf, Fulda never got into the game in the first leg and surprisingly lost 3-0 without winning a single set. In the second leg, Düsseldorf is enough to win a set to qualify for the final. Ochsenhausen won the first leg after a clear 2-0 lead (6-1 sets) in the end just 3-2. (9: 8 sets) In the second leg, Düsseldorf immediately won the first set, which was already enough for the overall victory, and the game 3: 1, while Saarbrücken clearly won 3: 0 against Ochsenhausen.

Düsseldorf won the final 3-1 and became German champions for the 28th time.

Women

A total of 10 teams took part in the women's race. The TTV Hövelhof replaced the previous season's relegated NSC Watzenborn-Steinberg . With 18 wins from 18 games, ttc berlin eastside became German champions for the third time in a row.

Since no second division team agreed to be promoted and the ninth-placed TSV Schwabhausen withdrew, the league consisted of only nine teams in the next 2016/17 season.

TuS Uentrop (champion, 2nd league ) and TTK Anröchte (second, 2nd league) renounced promotion to the 1st Bundesliga .
