2. Bundesliga

The 2016/17 Bundesliga was the 51st season for men and the 42nd season for women in the top German table tennis division. Champions were Borussia Düsseldorf and ttc berlin eastside .

Men

The men's season began on August 28, the main round ended on April 2, 2017. After the TTC Hagen withdrew for financial reasons and no second division team had applied for a license for the first Bundesliga, only nine instead of the ten intended teams competed. The best four teams after the end of the regular season take part in the play-off rounds to determine the German champions. The semi-finals took place for the first time in the best-of-three mode and not with a return game, with the team better placed in the final table enjoying home rights in the first and possible third game. With the decision to increase the league to 12 teams for the next season, no team had to relegate. The TSV Bad Königshofen stopped the league next season back on ten teams.

TTC Jülich (second 2. BL) decided against promotion to the 1st Bundesliga .

Season course

Play-off places

For the first seven days of the match, the TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell and the TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen were in the first two positions - sometimes with the same point, game and set difference - these were also the only two teams that never fell under place during the entire season three fell back and were always on a play-off spot. The first defeat was for Fulda on the fifth matchday against Mühlhausen and for Ochsenhausen on the eighth matchday against Fulda. Borussia Düsseldorf , which started with a day off and a defeat against Ochsenhausen, found themselves in seventh place for the time being, but this was followed by twelve wins in a row, so that the club was able to conquer the top of the table on matchday eight and defend it to the end. Saarbrücken, whose top player Apolónia was one of the best players last season, but this time started with a 6-0 balance, was briefly fifth and for a matchday third, but mostly fourth, the penultimate Matchday could be finally secured. At the start of the season, Bergneustadt, Grünwettersbach and Grenzau also had a play-off spot for a short time, but from the sixth match day the top four spots were always occupied by the same teams.

midfield

The midfield consisted mainly of the TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt , who consistently took fifth place from matchday seven, Mühlhausen and Grünwettersbach, briefly in addition to Düsseldorf and Saarbrücken, Bremen and Grenzau were also in fifth to seventh place. Bergneustadt's deficit on fourth play-off rank was only two points at times, and there were still chances of it until the penultimate matchday. A clear 3-0 defeat against their rivals Saarbrücken made the deficit unattainable, however, and in the end six points were between fourth and fifth place. Grünwettersbach was briefly in the play-offs due to two wins from the first three games, but then slipped to eighth place. With victories over the leaders Düsseldorf and Ochsenhausen at the end of the season, the team took sixth place from Mühlhausen, the only team besides Bremen that had never been in a play-off position, but which was largely safe in sixth place from the fourth match day or seven, even in fifth place for a game day.

End of table

With the planned increase in the league to twelve teams, it was clear that no team would have to be relegated. In last place were Mühlhausen and Bremen for a short time, but from the fifth day of the game only the TTC drawbridge Grenzau , which with an almost completely reorganized team achieved only two wins - on the second and 14th day of play against Grünwettersbach and Bremen. Bremen's top player Steger failed to get started with a 1: 6 record in the preliminary round before he had to pause for months due to injury, so that the team was in eighth place for most of the season and only achieved four wins. The owners of the last two ranks were already determined several game days before the end of the season, even if Bremen was able to shorten the gap to Mühlhausen to two points.

Table history

Due to the odd number of teams playing, one team was suspended on each match day, which must be taken into account when looking at these statistics. Düsseldorf had no play on the first day of the match and was inevitably in fifth place for the time being. The order of exposure is Düsseldorf, Bremen, Saarbrücken, Bergneustadt, Grünwettersbach, Mühlhausen, Fulda, Grenzau, Ochsenhausen.

TSV Schwabhausen (champions 2. BL) renounced promotion to the 1st Bundesliga .
