After rolling in in the first week of the tour, the 190.5 km long 10th stage of the Tour de France 2006 from Cambo-les-Bains to Pau in the high mountains of the Pyrenees , through the French part of the Basque Country, followed on July 12th . The drivers had to overcome a total of three passes, including the Col de Soudet (1540 m, category HC) and, with a difficult ascent, the Col de Marie-Blanque (1035 m, category 1). The stage destination was in the valley after a 40 km long descent.

The race started very rough. Shortly after the real start, some escape groups formed, but the field caught up with them early on. Sylvain Chavanel was only able to break away more clearly at 11 km . His attempt to escape ended after 23.5 kilometers on his own.

After 40.5 kilometers a 15-strong top group formed, u. a. with Jens Voigt and Juan Miguel Mercado . On the first climb, the Col d'Osquich, Gert Steegmans and Thor Hushovd fell out of the leading group. At the summit of the Col de Soudet, only Cyril Dessel and Mercado remained from the leading group. On the descent, five drivers caught up with the leading duo again. The maximum lead at the foot of the Col de Marie-Blanque was 11:01 minutes. At the beginning of the steeper part of the climb, Mercado attacked, whose start only Dessel could follow. Together they reached the summit with a narrow lead over Iñigo Landaluze , who this time couldn't catch up with the two leaders on the descent. Even the main peloton could not significantly shorten the clear gap to Mercado and Dessel on the remaining 42.5 kilometers from the last summit. On the home stretch in Pau, Mercado won ahead of Dessel. Daniele Bennati won the sprint of the main field .

At the end of the stage is Cyril Dessel secured next to the dotted jersey and the yellow jersey of the overall leader. Mercado took second place in both ratings.

Above all, the appearance of the Basque secret favorite Iban Mayo was disappointing , who had to let the field go in the first serious climb and crossed the finish line clearly lagging behind in the Grupetto . Serhij Hontschar , who wore yellow , also had problems on Soudet and Marie-Blanque, as did Damiano Cunego , Levi Leipheimer and Markus Fothen , who wore the white jersey. But in the end they crossed the finish line with the main field.
