The 14th stage of the 2006 Tour de France on July 16 was 180.5 km long. With an air temperature of over 40 degrees, it led from Montélimar to Gap at the foot of the Alps and, with four moderate mountain ratings, offered a foretaste of what the drivers should expect in the next few days.
After the big success of the outliers on the previous part of the day, many drivers tried their luck again in the attack. The escape group that let the field move after 20 kilometers consisted of five drivers. Matthias Kessler , Salvatore Commesso and Pierrick Fédrigo had pulled away at km 33. After the group had meanwhile grown to ten drivers, the three initiators as well as Egoi Martínez and Mario Aerts remained. It remained uneasy in the field because drivers kept trying to catch up with the leading group. Rik Verbrugghe and David Cañada went into pursuit. Martínez, however, broke off the attempt to escape and let the first group fall back into the main field.
Shortly before the summit of the Col de Peyruergue, the two pursuers caught up with the four leaders. They crossed the Col de Perty together. The maximum advantage was 5:42 minutes. Then there was a dramatic scene in the breakaway group: 38 kilometers from the finish in a right-hand bend in which there was gravel, Verbrugghe paid taxes and fell over the guardrail. Cañada slipped away behind him, too, Kessler tried to avoid him and shot over the guardrail. He was able to drive on while Cañada sat on the edge with shoulder problems and Verbrugghe remained in the ditch covered in blood. Kessler then waited for the main draw. Commesso, Fédrigo and Aerts continued their escape. Fédrigo attacked on the climb to the Col de la Sentinelle. While Commesso could follow, Aerts had to tear down. In the main field, too, the drivers began to accelerate the pace with attacks on the Sentinelle. Commesso and Fédrigo reached the summit together.
In the descent from the Sentinelle with two opposing climbs, the chasing group with all the favorites accelerated, but finally could not catch up with the outliers due to their different interests. In the finish sprint, Fédrigo won ahead of Commesso. Christian Vande Velde was able to break away from the 34-man chasing group and crossed the finish line in third place.
