The 6th stage of the Tour de France 2009 on July 9th leads over 181.5 km from Girona to Barcelona . It contains three intermediate sprints and five mountain ratings of the 3rd and 4th categories. In addition, the whole stage runs through Spain.

The stage was made particularly difficult by the weather: rain meant that around 20 to 40 riders could not stay on their bikes without even falling once, and some top 10 candidates again lost time: Haimar Zubeldia lost 50 seconds, Mikel Astarloza and Denis Menchov have been there for over a minute, but the worst hit was Michael Rogers . The Australian from Team Columbia-High Road lost over 13 minutes and fell back into no man's land from 16th place overall after falling at the start of the climb.
