The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 7th led over 153.5 km from Cambrai to Reims . On this flat stage there were three sprint classifications and a mountain classification in the 4th category. After David Le Lays and Fränk Schleck retired due to broken collarbones during the day before, 189 of the 198 registered participants started.
Race course
The real start of the stage took place exactly at 2:00 p.m. after three kilometers of neutralized race through Chambrai. Dimitri Champion attacked shortly afterwards. He was followed by a group of four made up of Francis De Greef , Nicolas Vogondy , Iñaki Isasi and Iban Mayoz . Together they were able to break away from the field and achieved a maximum lead of around four minutes. Mayoz won the first sprint and the mountain classification. De Greef secured the other two sprint classifications.
Amets Txurruka fell in the field, but was able to continue. It was the only fall on this quiet stage. The teams Saxo Bank and HTC-Columbia did the main lead work, whereby the lead of the group of five began to shrink again and the field kept the outliers on a short leash. De Greef was arrested four kilometers from the finish and the others a kilometer later.
There were several roundabouts before the finish in Reims. This was followed by the first smooth mass sprint of this Tour de France, which Alessandro Petacchi was able to win again. Co-favorite Mark Cavendish , however, disappointed, he only finished twelfth. Thor Hushovd was able to defend his green jersey in ninth place, there were no changes in the other ratings either.
