Trajekt ( ZDB-ID : 275771-0) was the in-house magazine of Hinstorff Verlag in Rostock from 1970 to 1990 . Of the periodicals with sophisticated content and graphics in small format of 19 cm by 10 cm, a total of 23 issues have been published over the course of twenty years.

history

History of the magazine

The first Trajekt magazine appeared in 1970. It did not contain a foreword or a message to readers about the publisher's motif. Instead, issue 1 opened inside with a colored decorative sheet by the illustrator Heinz Bormann combined with the wish: "On the big wave of our time, the small ship and its crew always have a good trip on course for the next decade". The editorial on the issue of the new magazine, which the reader might have expected , was also missing with issue 2/1970. Nevertheless, the project met with a positive response. The editors reprinted a review on page 2 under the heading Die Fähre , which had appeared on the new periodical in the Berlin weekly Die Weltbühne . “Publishers dream of wonderful new advertising material that could be the publisher's calling card, brochure and literary ID in one. Some dream, others do. What various of the more or less elderly gentlemen among the house magazines of our publishers conceal with venerable patina. Hinstorff's new in-house magazine still shows it blank and with verve: concise and clear information about books, authors and literary society, ”it said. There was even admiration for the “remarkably white paper”.

In his Trajekt series, Hinstorff advertised new publications, recalled reprints, gave outlooks on new books through reading samples and quoted press reviews on important books. Original articles by Hinstorff published authors appeared again and again in the booklets. The notebooks were garnished with graphics and photo work. For over 20 years, Trajekt has been considered a “fresh literary breeze” and “poetry ferry” from Rostock.

History of the publisher

Hinstorff repeatedly used his in-house magazine to present the publisher's history and development in detail. In issue 12/1979, 20 years of state-owned company Hinstorff Verlag was remembered. Issue 14/1981 was dedicated to a “big” company anniversary: Harry Fauth headed his essay 150 Years of Hinstorff Verlag with “Traditions preserved, new things promoted”. Horst Bien delivered a "Congratulations, dear friends at Hinstorff". Jürgen Borchert started thinking about a future Hinstorff bibliography. And the publisher contributed the facsimile of the old publishing contract between Carl Hinstorff and B. Ritzerow.

In the following issue 15/1982 there was a review of the previous Hinstorff anniversary under the heading Dispute and open . Under the supplements to the history of the publishing house in volume 16/1983 under the title Gelernt bei Hinstorff there was a tribute to the former Hinstorff apprentice Adolf Marcks , who made it to a major publisher in St. Petersburg in the 19th century , and an article titled Hinstorff in Chicago . Issue 17/1984 contained further additions to the publishing history. In issues 19/1987 and 20/1988 Hinstorff celebrated his move to the publishing house Lagerstraße 7 in Rostock ( at an old site in the new house , first guests in the new house ). Issue 21/1989 took on another anniversary of the publishing house: 3 decades of national ownership - facts and figures . This article was supplemented by a copy of a conversation that Jürgen Grambow had with Konrad Reich about VEB Hinstorff Verlag.

Contributions were also made repeatedly to the former Hinstorff publisher Peter E. Erichson (issues 14/1981 and 22/1990).

Special issues

Trajekt 5 was a special issue for Franz Fühmann's 50th birthday on January 15, 1972

The name “trajekt” and the respective issue number appeared in lowercase on the title. Below was the publisher's name "Hinstorff Rostock".

Editor and editor

VEB Hinstorff Verlag was listed in the imprint with its Rostock address, but did not expressly identify itself as the publisher. Kurt Batt, Konrad Reich and Klaus Schlesinger (issues 1/1970 to 4/1971 and 6/1972 to 9/1974) were at times "responsible for the content" . In the 5/1972 issue, these three were listed under "Publishing and editing". Issue 10/1976 was published by Konrad Reich. For issues 10/1976 and 12/1979 to 22/1990, according to the legal notice, Jürgen Grambow was responsible for editing . The editors of the past, in the 1990 turnaround time of the GDR published booklet "special trajekt" concerned Renate Heincke, Grit Schröter and Horst Mocker.

The photo section of the Trajekt booklet showed photos of the authors of the publishing house, readings, book exhibitions, publishing events, etc. The imprint of each booklet contained a complete list of all illustrators and photographers. Rubrics

Information on Hinstorff's publishing program had a permanent place from the beginning of the publication to the end of the series. These appeared in the course of the years under changing headings, initially "New publications, subsequent editions, available production", later "New publications, subsequent editions" (issues 12/1979 to 22/1990). In addition, almost all of the booklets published contained the headings “Hinstorff Information - Hinstorff News” and “About the person - About the matter”. Occasionally press comments on Hinstorff and his program were given.

Appear

Hinstorff had initially announced that the series would be published every six months, but only kept this claim with two issues each in the years 1970 to 1972 (issues 1 to 6) and in 1974 (issues 8 and 9). In later years Hinstorff achieved annual publication (issues 7/1973 and 10/1976 to 22/1990). In 1975, 1977 and 1985 no Trajekt books were published.

scope

Most of the booklets were 60 pages long. The special trajectory 1990 with 40 pages and the 4/1971 and 9/1974 with 56 pages had the smallest volume. The volumes 5/1972 (Franz Fühmann on his 50th birthday) and 14/1981 (150 years of Hinstorff Verlag) were the most extensive, each with 132 pages.

Manufacturing

The first ten issues, published between 1970 and 1976, were produced by the "Franz Maecker" print shop in Neuruppin. Issues 11/1978 to 21/1989 were produced by the Schweriner Volkszeitung printer in Schwerin. The Schwerin printing house is designated for typesetting and printing for issue 22/1990. Ostsee-Druck in Rostock took over the typesetting and printing of the last issue (special trajekt 1990).

Edition

The number of copies of the individual Trajekt issues is not known.

Special traject

With the “Sonder-trajekt” booklet published in 1990, Hinstorff said goodbye to its existence as a state-owned company, although it still identified itself as “VEB” in the imprint. “The worries have not faded away” is the title of the preface to the magazine from December 1989. On the last page the publisher let it be known: “Hinstorff has a works council, elected in January 1990.” It was the first publisher in the GDR to opt for such a solution. On November 8th and 9th, 1989 the publishing house hosted its contemporary literature authors. The foreword states: “When the Hinstorff authors were in Rostock, Egon Krenz still held three positions. When they left Rostock and the gates at Hinstorff closed, gates were opened elsewhere. Suddenly Berlin's wall had a thousand doors. ” The idea for the Trajekt special came from the authors. They wanted to spontaneously articulate the opinions and sensitivities of those days. The further political events then overwhelmed authors and publishers. “Some of the contributions from our trajectory now seem almost classic - because they are historically obsolete,” says the preface to the 40-page contributions by a total of 15 authors. The “remarkable series” from Hinstorff's house “regrettably” did not survive the fall of the Wall , stated the 2002 yearbook for book lovers .
