Trancoso is a city ( Cidade ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 9878 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Trancoso is one of the twelve historical villages, the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal , and is part of the nationwide route of historical Jewish places, the Rede de Judiarias .
history
Celtic Lusitans settled here before the Romans occupied the area from the 1st century onwards . In 711 the Moors conquered the place and strengthened its fortifications. Between 811 and 1160, at least nine battles were fought for the possession of Trancoso. For the first time the place received city rights ( Foral ) from Dom Afonso Henriques , who in 1160 finally conquered the place from the Arabs. City rights were confirmed by King D. Afonso II in 1207 , by King D. João I in 1391 , and by King D. Manuel I in 1510 .
The shoemaker and folk poet Gonçalo Anes Bandarra (1500–1556), who became known as a fortune teller in Portugal, came from here.
Since 2000, Trancoso has been one of the twelve protected locations in Portugal as Aldeias Históricas de Portugal (German: Historic Villages of Portugal). In 2004 the previous Vila (small town) was elevated to a Cidade (city).
In memory of its Jewish community, which was particularly important in the 14th and 15th centuries, Trancoso was included in the Route of Traditional Jewish Places in Portugal ( Rede de Judiarias ) founded in 2011.
